The characters that seek to hinder Christian--his pitfalls--are an example of non-conforming to Christian ideals.

Married twice, with four children, and then had children with an 18-year-old girl. They were all Puritans. First married... and THEN converted. Christian leaves his family behind to go on this Pilgrimage, and then they end up following him.
