I thought it was interesting to learn how some of the advanced mathematical discoveries were made at a very early time in India. Mathematic operations such as addition, subtraction, etc., were found to have been used in the early Vedic period. It seems like the basic concepts that are used now were discovered well before they were actually "discovered."

We have the Pythagorean Theorem materials in our classroom to explore so it was nice to read the background of it. It was interesting to learn about the “Tetractys” or holiest number and see the pyramid with the numbers adding up to 10

I have a unit coming up soon wherein I've been instructed to 'focus on Math Catch-up'. So I'm taking the opportunity to really deep dive into and review the brand-new concepts of Algebra. I looked at Al-Khwarizmi, the father of Algebra, and i hope to bring that information to my students. The word 'algebra' comes from this mathematician's book, Al-Kitab al-mukhtasar fi hisab al-jabr wa’l-muqabala” (“The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing”). "al-jabr became the nickname fo the book and the concepts. Algebra!

I got very interested in the information about the school Pythagoras established in Italy in 530 BCE. It was nearly like a cult.....no looking at or eating black fava beans or urinating towards the sun.

He left no mathematical writings himself and I thought the whole thing was odd.

It is interesting to read about how math concepts were invented or learned about. I read about how Thales discovered that if you draw a triangle inside a circle and the longest side of the triangle goes straight across the circle, the angle across from that side will always be a right angle.
