They can give students an opportunity to self-evaluate and improve, but care must be taken that they aren't just memorizing a test. The retake shouldn't be the same test, how to do this without increasing teachers already high workload is important.

(re)takes are important to the learning process. The ability to prove learning becomes absolutely essential to proving student learning. Accommodating the retakes could be done through assigning a progress (satisfactory, unsatisfactory) grade until materials are completed and assigned a numerical grade.

Yes. It comes down to the purpose of assessments. If it is to assess how much students learn, we are failing them by not allowing them to learn from their mistakes, and to simply move on to the next topic, that may even build on the last topic.

The problem is that grading and learning do not work together in our current society and learning culture. Retakes can show authentic learning, but they do not fit into our grade structures, or our implied grading schedules (Teachers are required to submit grades at the end of grading periods, which means that at some point there is no longer any further time to keep learning)

One thing I do in my classes is offer test corrections instead of retakes, in which students must write an explanation of why their new answer is better than their old (incorrect) answer, in order for them to demonstrate that they understand and aren't just taking another guess. This is offered on schoology and students must complete it on their own time / they don't get class time for this.

For a subject that is cumulative in nature, retakes are necessary and important because a student needs to establish base knowledge in a topic before she can adequately grasp the next topic.
I feel that retakes are incredibly important. If a student does not or has not mastered a topic, it is hard for them to move on in the curriculum. In addition, we should be in the interest of measuring and recording student successes, not failures. Giving them new opportunities promotes learning and growth, and shows them that success is possible- it shouldn't always be restricted to a small snapshot moment. The overall growth is more important.

I wouldn't say that retakes are necessary to the learning process, but I do think that self-assessments can be extremely helpful. If a teacher has a test/exam for the end of a unit, consider partnering that grade with a self-assessment from the student (could be in the form of a survey) which might provide more insight into the student's success. I've seen this in other classrooms before and would definitely consider it for my own summative work.

What I did learn was the importance of reinforcing the meaning of a 0 given when a student has missing work and making sure they understand what you are communicating

I remember one time in particular that my college professor told the class that one of our papers was due on ___ day, but when it came to that day, he said "just kidding!" you get to revise for one more day! He then spent the class working through each student's paper with them, showing the student how he reads their papers. That was so eye-opening to me and really helped me to learn ways I could practically improve my writing. Since then, for certain writing assignments, I have given a variety of different revision options, from which I have seen great growth in students. This is not practical to implement for every paper, but for a few mid-year papers, I think this can be a great tool for learning.

In order to allow for retakes, teachers must make sure that either they are working with the student, or the student is receiving adequate help outside of the classroom. A retake will not be beneficial as just a retake- in other words, the students must work on the missed materials in order to then master it the next time they take a test. Without the help of the teacher or otherwise, this can be really challenging.

0s are incredibly important in preparing students for everyday life in terms of meeting deadlines and holding students accountable. To the counter point that allowing 0s lowers morale, sometimes as humans we need to sit in our emotions in order to overcome them. Therefore, 0s are great to help students prepare for the real world.

I am fine with allowing retakes. Students are fighting many battles dealing with MANY stressors outside of school. All of that plays a part in how well he or she does on an exam. Students who are academically strong may do poorly on a test because the night before his or her parents announced they are getting divorced. I think that retakes should be allowed, especially now because of the increased level of mental illness resulting from the pandemic.

This is an uphill battle. I do not know how to do this without making the last couple days of a grading period a living hell for the teachers. If we offer unlimited retakes (evidence suggests offering limited retakes is not any better than offering no retakes), many students will procrastinate until the last second and wait to do the retakes until the end of the period and push a large amount of work onto the teacher at the last second.

Zeros serve as a wake up call to the student. If it is a zero on a test, student did not learn the content and needs to revisit and prepare better using teacher recommended strategies and skills. Zeros also serve as a reminder that the student is not (perhaps) being responsible and accountable for the missing work. It also serves as a red flag to a teacher and a parent that the student needs extra assistance.

I feel I still need more professional development on options. I think it is also important to hear parent expectations for learning - why are they sending their daughters here/what do they expect?

I see the benefits and drawbacks on both sides--zeroes come with a lot of emotional weight, which may discourage students, but they also offer students real-world feedback which may match the kind of consequences they would face in college or a career setting. I think I agreed most with the people who suggested that we need some kind of symbol that notifies students of missing work, reflected in their grade somehow, so students take missing work seriously.

What I had never thought about before was that by reducing the lowest score to a 60% across the board, what you are doing is reducing the grading scale from a 100 point scale to a 40 point scale. It does seem unfair that there are a whole 70 points that count as failing.
