Dear TMIH students 2025-2026

May I welcome you to London, to the LSHTM and to the Masters in Tropical Medicine and International Health. I believe you will benefit from the unique atmosphere of the LSHTM and I can promise you an interesting time – your classmates will come from all over the world. I congratulate you on having chosen this course which has the greatest choice and the widest options available in the LSHTM – you can structure your MSc in many different ways.

In term one (Sept -Dec), the building block and foundation module for this course is the DTMH course which is delivered through a series of lectures, seminars small group teaching and practical sessions as outlined in the related pages. The DTMH course for MSc students is constructed as MSc module 3463 (‘Tropical Medicine , Parasitology and Public Health’). The material taught for this module is identical to the DTMH course and so your MSc contains a ‘built-in’ opportunity to study for and take the LSHTM’s Professional Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. Although taking the Diploma exams in December and being awarded the Diploma is optional for you as MSc students we have never had anyone not wish to take advantage of the opportunity. However because the same exam cannot stand credit in two qualifications we award you 60 MSc credits for separate assessment tasks taken during term 1 and exams in the first week of January which are based on the material studied in term one in the DTMH. These will generally not be taken by your DTMH comrades except where they are exercising an option to obtain Masters credits and use their DTMH as recognised prior learning for the MSc in the future.

Because we have a lot to get through in the DTMH we have to start early and most of what the LSHTM has designated as ‘welcome week’ is taken up with the course, you will be the first MSc group to be registered (window is 10-11am on Monday 22nd September in the library - first floor of the Keppel Street building) so that we can get your access up and underway. The only thing you need to bring to be registered is your passport. This also means that late arrivals could be disadvantaged because a lot is covered in the first few days. So you should try to arrive in London before Monday 22nd September and get in touch with us if there is a problem doing so.

I am your Programme Director and I will striving to ensure that you are able to satisfy your ambitions in coming to study and learn with us. I am also determined to be available and accessible to all of you – my office on the third floor of Keppel Street is 303a – there is no appointment system and you should come by and check if the door is open. We will also have a WhatsApp and email group.

Dave Moore is deputy director of the Programme and Dave and I will be helping you with academic mentors/personal tutors who in many cases are TMIH alumni. To help us with this process there is a questionnaire about your interests on these pages which we hope you will fill in advance and which we will use to try to match your interests with those we have lined up to advise, support and mentor you. The Programme Administrator is Rohima Begum who sits in the PAO in Tavistock Place. Clare Warrell is directing the DTMH.

With best wishes and welcome again

Robin Bailey

Professor of Tropical Medicine

Programme Director MSc TMIH

Room 303a Keppel Street

Robin.Bailey@lshtm.ac.uk

07763 926778

Venue:

Messe München
Am Messesee 2
81829 München
Germany

For the last three years we have run an official TMIH field trip to the ESCMID Global conference which is held anually in April in a major European city. This is in the Easter break so you do not have any teaching scheduled opposite it. ESCMID is the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases which aims to have a global subject reach and offers excellent educational and training sessions in global health. There are substantial concessions for registration for students and those from LMICs. Past MSc students have presented their projects there. We are expecting to use ESCMID Global as a focal point for TMIH reunions and for TMIH/DTMH students from different year groups to connect up. We hope you'll all come - there has been a fee contribution for a budget to organise ESCMID membership, registration, travel and accommodation and the details as to how will be forthcoming. But save the date!

Check out https://www.escmid.org/congress-events/escmid-global/

In term 1 there will be 1 hour per week of TMIH time - usually on a Tuesday or Thursday afternoon in which we will address the TMIH specific assessment tasks outlined in the Module Assessment Guide and some other capacity building. Please note that it is these tasks and not the DTMH exam or other assignments that count towards your MSc. (From the MSc standpoint, all DTMH sessions are optional, but obviously we want you to pass the DTMH ) . A detailed time table for TMIH hour will appear in an box below

Please note this example was graded 4(very good). The answer was considered very good because it was a well structured document with good use of headings, and easy to read, used referencing and references appropriately and avoided the trap of using up too many words summarising things the paper said rather than critiquing . It was a clear discussion of validity importance and generalisability which answered the question. I think we did not give it a 5 because we thought there were a few additional issues with the paper that were not highlighted

They used a PRISMA type diagram to account for all the papers they found, discarded or slected to review. They summarised and reviewed those that they considered important primary evidence and then made a recommendation based on the evidence and indicated what they thought was important in reaching a decision and how they got to it . And they managed to do it on six slides and a title slide- they could have had a further slide of references and still stuck to the guidance

Your fees or your sponsors have contributed £520 to this trip. Here's what we do with it-

The £520 per student is collected by fees and put in a budget.

You don't have the £520 to spend yourselves and we can't run individual accounts or pay an accountant to do so

So the budget is pooled and then spent/allocated on the group activity in the following order

1)ESCMID membership

2)ESCMID registration

3)Accommodation in Munich

4)Visas travel and insurance costs for those requiring Schengen visas

5) Travel

So when we get down to travel we will advise how much of what is left is available by dividing what is left by the number of people to support. If people then want to claim for their accommodation or travel we'll need a transaction to reimburse, completely or partially
