Why do we use the passive?

The ACTIVE form expresses that somebody IS DOING something to somebody or something.
here we highlight John (the active person).

Example: John KILLS Cathy → we highlight John

With the PASSIVE form we express that something IS DONE to somebody.
So we can highlight the affected action, person or object. We can use the passive too if we don't know who did the action, or if it's not important.

Example:
Cathy IS KILLED (by John) → we highlight Cathy
