What is the value in learning about the HCC? How do their efforts relate to your work? What are their assets? In what ways can this be a reciprocal partnership?

Knowing ones history is an asset to both people of a culture and to others outside of the culture. Valuing cultural rituals and celebrations (marriages and funerals) by teaching the young the songs, the music, the tradition helps keep the culture alive and connected. I learned more about Hmong culture and history which helps me understand and hopefully connect better with families.

I actually did not know that there is a large population on Hmong people living in China (mostly hear news local or national news). I am interested in what these folks experience living in China is like.
I think the HCC is a very important organization as an institution that supports al education and Hmong culture. I was very impressed with the library's doctoral work on Hmong people/cultures.
I also, noticed the importance (and difficulty) of grant money for these organizations to continue their valuable work in the community. Also it was noticed, how there is competition/conflicting views amongst community members in collaborating to support and improve on an already existing organization. JVS

There is a great deal to still ponder about what was shared in this visit. Much of what was written on the panels I already knew. I wonder how much of this was written or influenced by the Hmong community rather than through research or the pulling of archives. I wonder what is the fate of this resource and how the community finds it's value when there are not new waves of immigrants. I wonder in what ways the Karen population has connected to this resource, if at all. I also wonder about the maintenance of historical information and files in non-electronic ways. I know nonprofits often move slower in this area, yet it is of great importance to keep that data. Is the community vying for the sustainability of this organization or moving towards some of the larger organizations in the metro area?
NTL

I've been to the Hmong Cultural Center a few times and it hasn't expanded much except that they've been able to maintain and added a couple of things such as their panels and the artifacts.
It is definitely a great resource for the community. I do hope that the HCC continue to receive grants to preserve, if not all, some parts of the Hmong culture and history. The classes such as the wedding/funeral rituals are great because families are not teaching them to their children as often or at all today.
