Established by a Royal Charter, the BBC is a public service broadcaster funded by the licence fee paid by UK households.

They use the income from the licence fee to provide services including 9 national TV channels

BBC World Service broadcasts to the world on radio, on TV and online, providing news and information in 27 languages and world service English language.

They also have commercial operations including BBC Worldwide and BBC Studios, our TV production subsidiary. Profits from these activities are returned to the BBC for investment in new programming and services.

  • John Reith (1889-1971) was the founder of the BBC.  
  • He was its first general manager when it was set up as the British Broadcasting Company in 1922
  • He was its first director general when it became a public corporation in 1927.  
  • Reith fought off the politicians' attempts to influence the BBC, while offering the British people programmes to educate, inform and entertain.

    • watch or record live TV programmes on any channel 
    • download or watch any BBC programmes on iPlayer – live, catch up or on demand.
    The fee you pay provides a wide range of TV, radio and online content, as well as developing new ways to deliver it to you. In addition to funding BBC programmes and services, a proportion of the licence fee contributes to the costs of rolling out broadband to the UK population and funding Welsh Language TV channel S4C and local TV channels. 

    The licence fee allows the BBC's UK services to remain free of advertisements and independent of shareholder and political interest.

    Ofcom has been regulating BBC since 3rd of April 2017.
    Before Ofcom, BBC Trust was the one that regulated BBC.
    The BBC Trust ceased when Ofcom took on responsibility for the BBC’s regulation on 3 April.
