  • On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina devastated coastal areas of the Gulf Coast states of Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi, including the city of New Orleans. It was among the greatest of natural disasters to ever strike the United States.

  • Affected about 15 million people.
  • Impacted 90,000 square miles of territory from central Florida to eastern Texas.
  • Winds topped 175 mph at its peak as a Category 5 hurricane.
  • Storm surge on the Mississippi coast reached 30 feet.
  • Produced 33 tornadoes.

    -at the bottom of the lake there is still things left from the landslide that can be found 
    - now they have found safe ways to best try and prevent this happening again though it’s likely not to work

    • It didn’t take San Francisco long to recover from the fires and earthquake because of steam powered equipment cleaned up all the debris

    • San Francisco spent 100 million in reconstruction but that would be 2.7 billion in today’s currency

    It occurred on Friday, May 31 1889.

    Some victims of the flood were found as far away as
    Cincinnati, others found years later in 1911.

    Before the flood, the dam contained up to twenty million tons  of water before giving way.

    The dam was 14 miles away from Johnstown.

    2,209 people died in the floods, 396 of which were children.

    99 families were completely killed in the flood.

    1,600 homes were destroyed.

    Seventeen million dollars in property damage was dealt.

    The dam was owned by the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club.

    Nearly four million dollars were raised for the Johnstown relief effort.

    The flood was able to swept up 170,000 pound locomotives nearly 5,000 feet.

    The debris on a stone bridge covered 30 acres.

    Nearly 750 unidentified victims are buried in the Plot of the Unknown in Grandview Cemetery.
