"There were quite a few reasons for us Texans to declare our independence. When we came to the land, we were grateful for the welcoming to the Mexican land, but their laws we couldn't follow. For example, we couldn't practice our own religions, only Catholicism. Also, all formal documents were written in Spanish. The things that really caused the revolution was when they said that we couldn't bring slaves in." -Buscemi.

"My husband fought alongside great men, like William Travis, Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie, and Juan Seguin. I was ordered by Santa Anna to come here and tell you about what happened to these men. They are hoping to let you know what happens if you rebel. 183 men stood at the Alamo, while Santa Anna sent 1,800 men to storm the fortress. Only 5 defenders of the Alamo survived, and they were executed afterwards." -Dickinson.

After Mexico declared it's independence from Spain, they invited Americans into their land in Tejas. The Americans came to Texas looking to grow rich, to escape the law, or to start a new life after Stephen Austin's success in the colony. The Americans in Texas, or Texans, did not like the laws. They especially didn't like that they couldn't have slaves, so they disobeyed their laws. The Mexican government sent an official to make sure the Americans weren't disobeying laws, and they were displeased to find that they were. To send a message, the government made the Texans pay taxes, and sent more troops to Texas. The tensions in Texas were very high, until eventually the Texans decided to make petitions, asking to become a self-governing state within Mexico. The Mexican President, Santa Anna did not approve. Santa Anna sent even more troops, this time to capture a cannon, and the Texans rebelled and fought for independence. The Texans set up their small "army" at Goliad and Alamo. Santa Anna sent 1,800 men to the 183 men at the Alamo. Not a single one of the men at the Alamo lived, and this encouraged Tejanos, slaves, and Americans to help. After a massacre at Goliad, the Texans got their independence by killing nearly half of the Mexican men sent. The Texans declared their independence, and called their nation "The Lone Star Republic".
