The world as it is right now, can never seem to collectively agree upon anything. Each of us humans have our own beliefs, cultures and opinions, but today, I would like to focus more on engaged citizenship and the importance of tackling conflicts both in the past and present. On October 24 of last year, the collective world celebrated the establishment of the United Nations(UN). This group was founded following World War II, with its principal objective to promote international peace and security among its member nations and to ensure that the terrible effects of war won't occur again by diplomatically settling current problems. This article of mine will feature key events which all build up to the creation of the UN. And through this, I hope to be able to draw important insights from history, which bring forth the importance of addressing conflict and being a good digital citizen. Well, the harsh reality we face is that conflict in itself is unavoidable and inevitable. The Truth is, we humans are bound to have conflicts. We each have our own mental thinking, opinions, and biases which cloud us from seeing other people eye to eye. Due to our individual differences culturally, personality wise and capability wise, conflict or small disagreements will inevitably and certainly grow within groups of people no matter what. These few factors that are mentioned already play a big part in the conflicts created in our world. Thankfully, as written in this article by the Business Professionals of America, “while conflict is inevitable, disagreements can be a key component to progress. It's how we handle conflict that sets us apart”(Business Professionals Of America ,Why conflict is inevitable 2019).  Conflict can be considered as a two sided coin, one posing an inevitable threat and doom to the world, while the other offers progress and betterment to society. Firstly, these conflicts in our history brought about a lot of industrial and technological advancements, which we still use until today! Common household items such as telephones, cameras, and computers were all advanced further during these conflicts. And based on a source by Becky Little, Medical advancements such as: Flu Vaccines, Penicillin and Blood Plasma Transfusion were all World War II inventions that would inevitably change the world. Innovations and Progress were done during these conflicts and challenging times as they were pushed to their limits and basically backed into a corner to develop and fund projects to help their countries and their Allies. This is actually the positive side of the coin regarding conflict, but we must not take away all of the harm that it brings as well. When conflict is not treated and handled properly, it can turn corrupted and be the embodiment of death,injury and destruction. One particular example of the horrible sides of conflict would be the firing of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The United States “had no choice” but to fire their ultimate killing machine to the unrelenting Japanese people, which ended up killing 110,000-210,000 people. As you can see, Conflict is definitely a very two sided coin, with a long lasting impact on our society and on our world. On one hand, Conflicts may bring us Convenience(from the advancements), Innovation and Better Problem Solving. But on the other Hand, Conflicts like war may leave us with a poor economy, a polluted world, and a destroyed future.

I have 2 quotes to present today, one from Karl Marx and one from Sydney J. Harris.  Karl Marx says that “History repeats itself, first as tragedy, second as farce”. While Sydney J Harris states that “History repeats itself, but in such cunning disguise that we never detect the resemblance until the damage is done”. Looking at these 2 quotes, we can see the hidden message that History can and will repeat itself. Which is why we can say that both of these quotes stand true until this day. One perfect example of conflicts reincarnating in our current world would be the whole issue with the Taliban. This particular issue with the Taliban can be related and traced back to the events of WW2. After the Afghan War, the Taliban and its brutally repressive regime emerged. The Taliban combined a mixture of strict ideologies and conservative social codes to create this brutal regime. They had policies that discriminated against women, destroyed other religions and tortured many of their citizens. These included the exclusion of women from public life (employment, education etc.), the systematic destruction of non-Islamic Religious places and relics, along with the implementation of very harsh criminal punishments. Doesn't this sound a little bit familiar? To me, this heavily sounds like a newer version of Hitler and his Nazis from WW2. Hitler and his Nazis believed that the Aryan Race was far superior than the rest, conquered many countries for Lebensraum (more living space), and conformed to Social Darwinism/Anti-Semitic actions (discrimination, harm and violence) against the Jewish Community. Both of these harsh and Cruel leaders faced backlash from the world, and created much conflict with Western countries such as the US. In the end, this may not be a clear cut or 1 is to 1 example of history repeating itself, but we do see the parallels between these 2 conflicts. Yes! Without a Doubt, Conflicts can certainly be resolved in a peaceful, non violent manner. I may be too much of an optimist, but I do believe that all conflicts can be resolved no matter what. Conflicts ranging from Small to Large, can be resolved in a variety of ways. Looking at it from a Global Politics perspective, negotiations, mediation, arbitration and litigation are all possible ways to resolve conflict. But in General, we should approach our conflicts with the intention of peaceful resolution. We should do anything and everything possible to resolve conflicts peacefully, and without anyone being harmed. We, as the people of the nations we build, have the responsibility and power to solve and create conflicts. Which is why we must do everything and anything to make sure, we all create a better world for the future.

But we too need to do our part, in making sure we address societal conflict at present. Based on my insights and learning from my History lessons, I am able to suggest a few ways to contribute to addressing the underlying conflicts in our world today. The First contribution would be to mediate between peoples. We as the youth need to be able to respect each other’s perspectives and opinions, while at the same time valuing ours. Through this, we may cause no further harm, and become mediators in a very conflict centered world. Second, we must be critical thinkers as well as researchers. Us young members of society must be able to think on our own, and be knowledgeable about societal issues to not only raise our awareness and critical thinking, but also for us to form an understanding of what is right vs what is wrong. And Ultimately, we must Stand Up for What Is Right and the greater good.
