Nothing is going to get better. It's not.”

Hurricane Irma

My lorax went through his first Hurricane with me this year. Hurricane Irma is a hurricane that had a great influence on the southeast coast of the United States. Many small islands and rural areas were majorly affected by Irma. Irma originated near the Cape Verde Islands from a tropical wave that had moved off the west African coast three days prior. On September 6th, Irma had reached its peak intensity with 185mph and minimum pressure of 914 hpa. It was made into the second most intense tropical cyclone worldwide in 2017 behind Hurricane Maria and the strongest worldwide in 2017 in terms of wind speed. Irma had a great influence not only on just the humans but on the environment as well. Many plants, such as trees, were destroyed during the harsh winds. Animals were not as fortunate either. Habitats were lost during this time due to the harsh weather predicaments. Flooding in some areas occurred and lives were also lost. Both human lives and animal lives faced a tragic end.

Electric Water Boiler

My lorax and I were heating up some water through an electric water boiler that uses electrical energy derived from sources such as fossil fuels, nuclear power, and renewable sources. With the use of this appliance, when the water is at a certain boiling point, instead of turning it off manually the electric water boiler automatically turns off and does not light up bright blue anymore in order to conserve electricity. As we poured our hot water we had also witnessed water vapor that has left the heated area and entered a colder area.

Trees contribute to their environment by constantly providing oxygen, improving air quality, improving climate, conserving water, preserving soil, and supporting wildlife. During the process of photosynthesis, trees take in carbon dioxide and produce the oxygen we breathe. Various types of trees can be found in various regions. Trees have a wide variety of practical and commercial uses. Wood was the very first fuel to be used by humans. Even today, wood is used for cooking and heating about half of the world's population. Wood is obtained by cutting down trees. Trees provide timber for building construction, furniture manufacture, tools, sporting equipment, and thousands of household items. Wood pulp is used to make paper. However, due to the increasing population of humans and the overuse of wood, many forests on earth are beginning to decrease. Although the number of new tree plantations is constantly growing each year, their total still equals a tiny fraction of the Earth’s forested land. So not only are trees essential for life, but as the longest living species on earth, they give us a link between the past, present and future. This is why it is necessary for us to monitor our forests and the amount of damage we have inflicted on the environment.

Our Pollinators

Bees are amongst the most important creatures to humans on Earth. They can be found practically on any continent except for Antartica. My lorax and I encountered just a few of these spectacular insects. These amazing insects pollinate over 80% of all flowering plants including 70 of the top 100 human food crops. One in three bites of food that we eat is derived from plants pollinated by bees. Without bees our agricultural industries would face a decline. So it is important to acknowledge these wonderful insects and preserve the environment in which they reside in at all times.
