“Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify, and play with individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words. It is completely auditory and does not involve print. For example, when children can hear that ‘cat’ is made up of the sounds /c/ /a/ /t/, they are showing phonemic awareness.”
