While Paapa Essiedu's interpretation captures the unbalanced behavior Hamlet exhibits by this point in the play, I believe the subtlety and reflective nature of David Tennant's Portrayal communicates the ideas encapsulated in the soliloquy better. I was less distracted by the acting and was able to focus on the words. Additionally, I feel that having Hamlet appear more pensive furthers how serious he seems about the ideas he espouses. Calm madness is almost more concerning.

-Mariel S

I think that Tennent's version fits more closely with hamlet because in the book the lines between Hamlet's sanity and insanity begin to blur, so we aren't sure if he is mad yet or not. Tennents shows very little emotion outside, but a lot of built of emotion is building up on the inside in this performance. While Hamlet does feel turmoil, I do feel that Essedui was a bit too dramatic and distracting.

I prefer the second video. To me it had more emotions and depth to it. Also the speaker made sure you heard every word and the importance behind some but putting emphasis. He also didn't also just talk with words but with movements as well.

Both versions of Hamlet’s famous “To Be or Not To Be” soliloquy were similar and pretty successful. But I think David's version was better. He spoke a bit calmer so I was able to focus more on the words.
-Bettie T.

In spite of the fact that both versions of Hamlet's "To Be or Not To Be" were good, I prefer Tennant's version much more as I find it to be more compelling. Paapa Essiedu's interpretation was excellent, but it was just too dramatic, and it interfered with the meaning of the words. I found Tennant's calm manner particularly appealing as a viewer, which really contributed to my ability to focus on the words.
