         <description><![CDATA[<div>The state refers to land that is being controlled by a government. This might be the same area as a country. This includes the people in charge of the government, the businesses located within the land, and all the people in it. <br><br>There were hundreds of ancient Greek "states" (or city-states) of various sizes. Each had it's own government, army, and traditions but they all worshiped the same gods and spoke the same language. The most powerful Greek states were Athens, Sparta, Corinth, and Megara. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>A form of government where a group of people make all the decisions in their country.<br><br>Between 1100 and 800 BCE, oligarchies were the most common form of government in city-states.  The ruling group, or oligarchy, were rich and came from wealthy families. </div>]]></description>

Even though the king had the power, he had to work with the assembly or a council.  </div>]]></description>
