These two moments in the text reveal Rex's complexity because he is both selfish and selfless. Almost half of the time in The Glass Castle Rex shows an enormous amount of selfishness. Most of that selfishness is contributed by his intake of alcohol. His family is excited to have their very first Christmas Rex comes home drunk and ruins that perfect night. On top of that he doesn't feel guilty for doing that he ends up sitting on the couch laughing about Mary Rose. The only moment that I found Rex being selfless was the time he brought loads of groceries for his kids. His intentions might have not been pure. But he did something that wasn't for himself. Rex is not the kind of man to be selfless and selfish towards people he chooses. His selfishness has grown from his childhood. Rex’s childhood affected him to his adulthood.
