International Journal of retail & Distributions Management - Localisation as a marketing strategy for small retailers

-builds on previous work by parker and byrom (2000) on the importance of small retail outlets to the economy
-investigates how localisation can be used as a marketing strategy for small retailers
- talks about globalisation and how there is a lack of agreement on the true impact of its environmental issues
-futhermore, this paragraph also explains how businesses on global scales sell things the same way everywhere, the article suggests that large multinational retailers are to blame for the pop up of out of town shopping centres and the affects they cause on local communities and smaller retailers
-this journal also uses social aspects using alb row (1992) who said that globalisation is 'the process whereby the population of the world is increasingly bonded into a single society'
-it is believed that the local retail sector is small but its influence on UK economy is large
-Parker and byrom 2000, local retail suffers because of high crime, inadequate business training, individualism and lack of voice, distrust and rapid change of consumer behaviour
-growing evidence to suggest that thriving small and medium sized retail and suggests that they can have a positive influence on community cohesion
- as a strategy, globalisation can only offer a limited explanation for the behaviour of organisations
-seeing shifts in attitudes among british consumers towards more local sources of produce and more community - focused service structures
-suggests that localisation has received little attention compared with globalisation strategies, which are often undertaken by multinational retailers
-Berger (2000) said that it offers potential in terms of explaining more socially and environmentally friendly business models
-global brands have often tried localisation strategies but seemed to have negative impact on company performance in world markets
-This is something that is being considered more now: how to integrate global brands as local
-This journal seeks to discover how small retailers can fully benefit from the term 'localisation' as a resource of making them stand out from the crowd, how can small retailers use being local to their full benefit? How can small companies use their advantage of being local as a source of interest to the person who buys/uses from them?
-For primary research this journal used the 3 p's - place, people and promotion to discover interactions, how their samples promoted and where they had their stores
-respondants in spain and scotland saw localisation as an important and positive global/local link
-There was some differentiation in what was defined as 'local' from person to person, could this be looked into?
-in terms of promotion, these stores seemed to rely on word of mouth, something that was also considered sustainable
-In the uk there are not many trade associations compared to spain, where many local stores are managed by retail trade associations
-This Journal concludes by suggesting that local retailers had a real understanding of local socio- economic factors and their ability to retain loyalty through personalised services
-suggests that results in local levels, business that is local has far better success then in compared to international strategy

Further Reading

-
