After her training, Nightingale came back to London and applied as a nurse at Middlesex Hospital. Impressed, her employer promoted her to a superintendent in just one year! Nightingale proved herself as a nurse during a cholera outbreak, when the conditions and practices in the hospital were unsanitary. She thought and shared more safe and improved hospital methods, which significantly lowered death rates. The stress had an impact on Nightingale's health, however, so she took a break to recover.

The British Empire and the Russian Empire fought for the Ottoman Empire during the Crimean War. With little supplies, British soldiers sent out into the Black Sea and came back severely injured. There were very little nurses to tend to the wounded soldiers and even so, the conditions were unsafe and miserable. The Secretary of War sent Nightingale a letter asking for her to assemble a team of nurses and care for the soldiers. Nightingale went to work and organized a team of 34 nurses and set off to Crimea. When they arrived, they quickly scrubbed the hospital while Nightingale tended to each soldier using the limited supplies. Most took to calling her "the Lady with the Lamp" while others simply called her "the Angel of Crimea." She was able to reduce death rates by two-thirds.
