As the Series was playing out questions arose regarding the integrity of the Series. There was a common belief that some White Sox players were being paid to fix games. This was because there was a large number of bets being placed on the Reds and not the White Sox. With both teams being relatively equal this was a cause for concern.

The White Sox were largely considered the best team but the Reds were not far behind. However there was an issue in the White Sox clubhouse and that regarded their salaries. Many players felt they should receive more money and this contributed to a bad morale around the team. When eight players were approached on the subject of fixing the 1919 World Series they jumped on the idea as they knew they would receive large sum of money. It was later revealed that gamblers were responsible for paying players to lose which explains the influx of bets placed on the Reds.

New York mob leader Arnold Rothstein was rumored to have had an influence on the fix as well as other crooks such as Billy Burns, Abe Attell, and Bill Maharg. The involvement of probable Hall of Famer Joe Jackson also remains in question as he played great in the Series and later stated he was not involved in the fix. He attempted to be reinstated many times but was denied every time. Even since his death his involvement remains a question and it will likely stay that way.
