After he bought the land he wanted to explore the land and try to find a waterway that led to the Pacific ocean, establish friendly relationships with the native tribes, and see if the stories of woolly mammoth were true. He sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to  lead the U.S. Corps of discovery on the expedition across the western lands of north America in the early 1800's. Sacagawea came on the expedition too she was a 16 year old when the expedition she was bilingual and brought her 2 month old son with her. Lewis, Clark, Sacagawea and 4 dozen other men set off on may 1804. The U.S. Corps Of Discovery traveled 8000 miles in 2 years from Missouri to the pacific ocean. In March 1806, the U.S. Corps Of Discovery prepared to made their return journey. On September 23 1806 they arrived back home. The only physical evidence of the ENTIRE expedition is a carving on a rock (W.
