There are many sources which tell us about Rashid Al-Din Sinan. Some talk about his character, his gentleness, and his humility. This already shows that he was a gentle, kind person. He was born in Basra between 1126 and 1135. He then made his way to Alamut for training and studied various religious and philosophical sciences with the future imam.

Sinan was not simply a fanatic (extremist); his reign in Syria proved that he was capable and talented, and he preserved Ismaili independence against the attacks of various foes. Sinan's enemies included anyone who tried to consolidate, or organize, the region, for that would have threatened the Ismailis' independence.
