On page 29, during Eddie's arrival to his first person, he undergoes a change in his body where he now can run like in his youth. The book gives the line "the running boy is inside every man, no matter how old he gets." The interpretation of this line is that despite a man's age or experience, a childlike wonder and joy will still remain. This is fascinating as Eddie was only able to physically experience this after dying and no longer feeling pain.

In the book, the idea of heaven is completely different to how everyone else imagines it. As the Blue Man says to Eddie, heaven isn't "a place where [you] can float on clouds and laze in rivers and mountains" but rather to understand your life on Earth through the five people who had a reason to be in your life. While I don't have a strong opinion on the idea of heaven, I feel like this explanation makes much more sense compared to how others see it.

Earlier in the book, it presented a flashback back to Eddie's 8th birthday. However, it was ruined by the fact that his family was preparing to head to a funeral. However on page 49, the Blue Man shows Eddie his funeral. The book then mentions young Eddie being there, having "no idea of the role he'd played in it." This strikes an idea that the funeral Eddie's family attended was for the Blue Man.

On page 53-54, Eddie's brother Joe revealed to the whole family that he had a crush on a girl named Marguerite. Eddie hits him in the arm to "shut it", before the two fully start fighting. It wasn't until the Dad threatened to slap them both when they finally stopped. Later, the Mom asks how he "danced with [his] new friend" before starting to dance together, even though Eddie didn't want to. This highlights the dynamic between Eddie's family. Joe and Eddie do fight though not a serious and bloody fight. On top of that, Eddie is shown to be closer to his mom than to his dad.

On page 97, the morning after the accident, Dominguez and Willie were standing outside of the closed Ruby Pier, as if waiting "for the old man to come in". This shows the audience how big of a hole it left in the people who knew Eddie. Clearly they had cared for him, and Eddie likely cared for them too.

On page 95, the Captain explains how his wish was to see a world without war. Eddie questions this due to the world they're in being a battle ground. It wasn't until the terrain transformed into a beautiful forest when Eddie finally saw what the Captain saw. I think this is a clever way to show the audience that different people have different perspectives on the same thing.

Throughout the book, Eddie is always questioning his purpose at Ruby Pier. He always talks about wanting to get away from there, along with feeling like he's cursed to be there. However, even from the very beginning of the book, it's made clear what his purpose is, protecting children. One example is him grabbing a kid out of the way because they were about to eat a cigarette butt off the ground. Eddie doesn't think much of it, saying that "people should be more careful".

The only thing Dominguez is able to say is that Eddie loved his wife, despite never knowing her. This proves that even to this very day, he adored Marguerite even after she passed away.

On page 164, after Marguerite was sent to the hospital, her and Eddie barely spoke to each other. They secretly blamed each other for losing the chance for adoption. It wasn't until months later when the "wound" healed, and started talking again. The book gives the message that "under the angry heat of life, love dries on the surface and must nourish from below, tending to its roots, keeping itself alive." This means that love is endless, and will still be there despite the tension.

It's baffling to me that Eddie was CORRECT by the fact there was a child in the burning barn, and yet the Captain lied to him saying he was hallucinating. I get he wouldn't want to upset Eddie for killing a child, but intentional or not, it's still messed up. I don't know whether to hate the Captain even more or not, because he was the reason why Eddie lived on in the first place.

When the attorney was looking through the drawers of the bedroom bureau, he found a leather-bound box underneath all the socks and underwear. He decides that the things inside the box were unimportant and keeps looking, despite the audience understanding the importance of each of those items. I found this intriguing because it shows that Eddie values human connection more than money.
