- It touches on themes of police brutality and being a minority, and especially on being a woman of color. The film gives a brutally honest portrayal of how police brutality affects communities of color
- The message Thomas is trying to spread is not just about being black or white but inequality in the world for example where you came from or where you live and gender
- everybody should be treated equal
- Speak up for what you believe in

Disrespect and injustice - The Hate U Give

For me, the message was quite clear. That all humans should be equal, cause that's what's fair but it's not the reality. For example, when Starr was talking to his uncle, who is a police officer; she asked him questions about how he would act regarding a suspicisous object in the hands of white skinned people or dark skinned people. He answered different, depending on colour.

So yeah, I think this movie is trying to tell us that people are being treated disrespectfully and isn't getting the justice they deserve based on their skin colour.
Sunniva

We believe the message in the film The Hate U Give is to always stand up for what you believe in and what you think is right. What drives the plot of the film is Starr’s internal conflict on whether or not to stand up for herself and her beliefs or not. At the end of the film the audience can see the true impact standing up for yourself can have on a society, let alone how greatly opinions matter in this world.

-Arlayna, Maria & Stine

The message of the film is that everyone is equal, even though people are different, live at different places and do different things. And that it is not about what is happening, but why they do it. I also think that is shows the fear of the acts of the police against black people. Would the policeman shoot Kalil if he was a white man? This movie sheds light over discrimination and racism and it will make you question the society we live in today.

Maren og Charlotte

The message is saying: Hates brings hates. It means that if you will not forgive then you will hate, and even though another group forgive, they will feel hate once again if the first group will try to give payback. Therefore, it’s not about the hate you give but about the hate WE give.

Speaking Up, Starr struggles with speaking up for Khalil for a variety of reasons. She worries that she doesn’t deserve to defend Khalil since they had grown far apart in the time before Big D’s party. She is also afraid to speak up, and in the midst of trauma and grief, it’s difficult for her to take on such an emotionally taxing project as standing up for Khalil in the face of national attention.

A predominant theme in The Hate U Give is racism, especially how it manifests in violence and police brutality. Starr faces discrimination and prejudice from her white classmates and from white police officers—for her friend Khalil, this prejudice is fatal. Another theme is bravery, as Starr must be brave enough to stand up to an unjust system and explore her own identity within the narrative. Another theme is healing and grieving as a result of violence. The entire Garden Heights community must find ways to cope with Khalil's death, and their outrage and pain is expressed in myriad ways.

Cecilia
