THE HISTORY OF FASHION

THE FASHION
Fashion began with the appearance of hono sapiens who dressed in the skins of animals that they hunted and in the Neolithic period human beings began to weave and spin later in Egypt, more elaborate garments were developed, mainly made of thread.
The ratification of the 13th amendment in 1863 meant that the cotton industry could no longer function with forced labor, but with one exception: "as punishment for an offense for which the party has been duly convicted, it shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." This meant that the imprisoned blacks would still work on the cotton farms.
The fight to desegregate textile factories lasted decades. As more labor moved south in the early 20th century, black workers fought for factories to be integrated. Even in the 1970s, there were strategic lawsuits, such as read v. Cone Mills, in which three black women, Shirley Lea, Romona Pinnix, and Annie Tinnin, successfully argued that Cone Mills denied them employment based on their race and gender.
By 1830, they had formed the FIRST WOMEN'S UNION which was trying to win a 10-hour work day and higher wages; they also formed one of the first significant labor strikes in the country. As in New England, there was an immigration boom in New York City in the early 19th century.

The fashion industry is responsible for 20% of the total water waste globally.
The production of clothing and footwear produces 8% of greenhouse gases. Every second an amount of textiles equivalent to a garbage truck is buried or burned.
The mere fact of "dressing", of covering our body with garments responds to a social requirement.
Dressing in a certain way, with specific garments taken from the fashion of the moment, is a "brand" that communicates the way in which a person assumes their sex, age, status and their role in society.
Fashion and the way of dressing is considered the greatest expression of freedom, especially by societies and governments that considered the imposition and use of certain garments to uniform citizens.
Fashion is a reflection of the main moral and aesthetic values of societies. Its impact on modern societies is undeniable and for centuries it has even shaped the way men and women see themselves. Its influence is visible when we analyze the "ideal bodies" of the 50s and 60s, and compare them with the physical characteristics of the contemporary ideal man and woman.
Judging the subject superficially, fashion and clothing design may seem like an irrelevant topic but it has a deep connection with the development of human societies.

what are the environmental impacts

Fast fashion carries a significant environmental cost, in fact, the fashion industry is the second most polluting, behind the oil industry. And the environmental damage increases as the industry grows, the most relevant negative effects are the following:

1. It creates a huge carbon footprint

The fashion industry produces 10% of all global carbon emissions. It emits more CO2 than international flights and shipping combined.

Due to cost savings, most of the fashion supply chain, raw material, production and marketing, is done in different parts of the world. Especially fast fashion items must be transported thousands of kilometers by plane or ship to reach their destination. This, together with the energy used by both the supply chain and the consumption phase, translates into a significant carbon footprint.

Another of the environmental problems of fashion is the production of synthetic polymers that are used in the manufacture of garments to make them last longer. However, they are not found naturally on the planet, so they must be manufactured synthetically.

2. Exploit natural resources

The fashion industry is the second largest consumer of the world's water supply.

The increase in clothing production requires more natural resources for the production of raw materials, such as cotton, wool, or leather. This further depletes our forest, water, and land resources.

It takes about 700 gallons of water to produce one cotton shirt. It is the equivalent of 8 cups a day for 3 and a half years.

Also, a lot of water is required to dye and make textiles. For example, one ton of dyed fabric can require up to 200 tons of water to produce.

3. It pollutes water resources

Washing clothes releases 500,000 tons of microfibers into the ocean each year, the equivalent of 50 billion plastic bottles.

Additionally, most clothing manufacturing takes place in developing countries, where environmental laws may not be as stringent. This means that untreated wastewater from factories is often discharged directly into rivers or lakes, which can be extremely toxic, damaging ecosystems and people's health.

4. It generates an enormous amount of waste

The equivalent of a garbage truck full of clothing is burned or dumped in a landfill every second.

According to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, a Western family throws away an average of 30 kilos of clothing per year. 73% of this will be burned or thrown in a landfill. Only about 12% will be recycled, yet less than 1% of this will be used to make new clothes.

5. Human rights abuse

Today, workers in the fashion industry are still facing miserable wages and dangerous working conditions.

At this point in the film, from a marketing perspective, we already know that "creating needs" has become obsolete.
Needs are neither created nor disappear and in this case they are not even transformed. Therefore, it is not the brands that create the needs, but what we provide are solutions for jobs, situations or if you want, needs that people encounter on a day-to-day basis.
And here is the grace, knowing which solution you are for whom, for what, and when we are useful.
Having this vocation for service, even though our proposal is embodied in a very specific product, whether as a piece of clothing or an accessory, it is important to be able to direct our brand towards people.
Whether we have an already established brand or are looking for a space to develop a new product, knowing the people we want to serve is essential to be able to better focus our value proposition and our products.
Beyond the typical segmentation by sociodemographic aspects, there is segmentation by use or motivation
