I think this poem is referring to the inability for some people's dreams to be accomplished because of things out of their control, such as economic issues or social status. These dreams are snuffed out and never see the light of day because of these people's lack of a proper environment to pursue what they love.

The poet of this poem is using analogy’s to make predictions about what happens to a dream that gets put off. Does it Rot away, does it completely disappear or does weigh down on the person with the dream? Depends on the person and the dream?

I believe this is saying that the inability for a persons dreams to be heard and accomplished can take them over. It is saying when a persons dreams and goals can't be told or heard, it can fester in their souls. It can cause pain or sadness. But it is also saying, it can become stronger and when the dream does show its light, it changes the world in big ways.

I think the line “dream deferred” refers to putting your dream aside. This could be especially true in the context of the time period people were living in. I’m assuming that a lot of people in Harlem had to put their dreams aside to focus on more important things. The poem describes that dream that they put aside, will you never go back to it or will you peruse it? The real life implications that that your dream might never come true because of things that are out of your control.

The author is connecting the text to the real world issue of peoples dreams being deferred because of something. The title of “Harlem” makes me think that he is saying the dreams of people and kids from Harlem are being deferred.

For the poem "Harlem" I see a connection between the text here referring to having to wait for a dream to the civil rights movement that was years later. Thinking about the title "Harlem" and dreams being deferred, it seems to me that Langston Hughes is talking about the struggles in Harlem. And thinking about the "I Have A Dream" speech from Martin Luther King Jr.

I think that Langston Hughes was talking about someone's dream being pushed away and the result of that in their life moving forward. The different examples the poet gave like crusting over like a sugary sweet or sagging like a heavy load look like examples of the effects not having their dream happen could have.

The poem is trying to say that when dreams are differed, a few things happen. the dream becomes a heavy Burden, it stays as a dream and never happens, or it slowly fades. possibly meaning everyone in Harlem has a dream but can't achieve the dream cause of the situation.
