La Tota is located at 3,015 meters above sea level and on its banks stands the municipality of Aquitaine, formerly called Pueblo Viejo.
The lagoon, of great beauty and much tourism, is 18 kilometers long, 8 meters wide and 60 meters deep, although it is losing size due to onion crops.
A tunnel excavated in the Boquerón de Cuítiva draws water for the steel mills of Paz del Río and for Sogamoso. Some beaches, such as Playa Blanca, are a great attraction for tourists. The Ajiés and Arrayanes streams are tributaries of the lagoon. La Tota is one more link in the great tourist chain of Boyacá, formed by rural landscapes, cities and towns with colonial architectural relics.
