in order to demonstrate empathy or an understanding towards others, one must have an understanding of themselves in order to feel for others.

Frankenstein understands that he is a monster, he understands the problems that come with his situation, and what others think of him. It is these feelings and self awareness that leads to him craving solid and sound relationships, even though he is unable to attain them. this is because of the other person, not himself. he is ready for connection

due to his lack of identity (or self awareness) he did not feel any kind of empathy to the people he was tricking. If he claimed his identity and was truthful and self aware, he may have felt bad for all the lying he did, and try to feel for the people he loved rather than deceiving them
