In June 1961, the police arrested Clarence Earl Gideon because of stealing. He couldn't afford a lawyer so he asked the Florida Circuit Court judge to appoint one for him but they denied his request. He represented himself badly and was found guilty. While he was in prison he began studying laws. From there, he handwritten a petition to the Supreme Court asking if they can hear his case and they gladly agreed. After hearing the case, the Supreme Court was in Gideon's side because the sixth amendment requires state courts to provide attorneys for defendants who cannot afford to get one. Scott sued the window whom he was left after his owner died. He claimed he was free because he moved to a free state. The supreme court decided he was not a citizen, and they had no jurisdiction in the matter. This court determined that it was unconstitutional.
