When I am reviewing my research I look at line by line

I am not using interviews...so I'm looking at line by line but also the medium (notebook, handwritten, online forum), who was addressed to, and what else might be there besides writing (e.g., drawings).

I like to color code major themes. That way I can see the commonalities visually across the transcription(s).

I like to code data by text blocks/giant paragraphs of speaker text. I like to read through the block of text and then code by key terms/words/concepts/constructs. I look mainly for large ideas and themes. I don't code line by line or by word or sentences. I code by looking for major themes or ideas per block of text.

When reviewing my research, I listen and read at the same time.

I will pause the audio. Thinking it through and then speak it out loud to make it make sense to my head. Almost like get it out of my head to get it back in my head - the right way.

Then I look for terms. Blocks of thought to code.

Reviewing teacher interviews.

First participant makes a joke when I explain that I’m interested in looking at overlap between work life and home life.

She states, “you mean there’s life outside of this?”

Speaks to her mental state and teacher identity.

I am doing line-by-line coding of a specific unit of story that I identified in the interview transcript. But as this time I am not doing gerund coding, I am from time to time struggling with coming up with the word/phrase that best describes my feelings of the data.

When I’m analyzing my data, I like to look at it deductively through my guiding theory which is Critical theory. I’m looking for cues that show me how the individuals in my population are interacting with relevant institutions, and how those institutions may be perpetuating hegemonic norms of systems oppression

When interacting with my data, I engage in axial coding separated by academic semester. With in each semester I have a few sections titled: events, Emotions, dilemas, characters, actions and narrative structure. In these sections I have three columns: codes, quotes and thoughts/memos. I insert the quote with a time stamp. the quote is usually a sentence or two. The code could be in vivo or a thematic code (I've made use of both deductive and inductive. I have very few memos - I'm trying to get better at this ;)

I am also thinking about how line by line coding is more or less constrained by modality of the data (word document, pdf, paper, excel, data analysis software)

One of my data sources for my project is a transcript I produced using a YouTube video, “Education 02.23.22,” posted in the 2022 Committee Videos playlist for the Georgia House of Representatives channel. The video is documentation of a subcommittee meeting that debated and then voted on Georgia’s “divisive concepts” bill, House Bill 1084, titled as the “Protect Students First Act.”

For this... I did line by line analysis multiple times. A previous profesor shared this table idea with the class, and I thought this process was really effective! Time consuming, but effective!

When I am reviewing my data, I look for a frequency with words and/or phrases. Because I like to use images to prompt discussion when interviewing, I look for language around feelings that come from viewing the shared image. I later categorize the words describing feeling and memo and jot any findings that bubble to the surface.

I am seeing how the speaker first legitimizes her program of study based on previous degrees earned and time teaching.

My data consists of social media posts and I go line by line to see if there any common words or phrases used, which can serve as categories.
