It is no overstatement to say that you carried the world on your shoulders this year! Through the challenges, fatigue, and unpredictability, you were the ones to emulate. You embodied what student support and advocacy truly is, and you displayed genuine and transparent care to our students. You showed them understanding, generosity, flexibility, and poise, and you taught them the ropes of our field by leading with your example. Each moment was a live demonstration of "what to do"! This year would not have been so successful had it not been for you, your dedication, and your expertise. I am eternally grateful for you and indebted to each of you.

THANK YOU.

With much gratitude,
Jo

This is true every year, but especially this one. I could not possibly have taught this course without all of the help that my TFs offered. Despite all of the challenges, you were there to make the students feel welcome and supported, and I know they appreciated it as much as I did. You should be incredibly proud of yourselves for all of your hard work and commitment to the students.

It was a big adventure shifting online and you helped to make all of your assigned students feel heard and attended to. You and Ashley were literally operating at the level of co-instructors and you were a joy to work with. Here is a picture of a North Carolina tree to symbolize that beautiful deck you often Zoomed in from and the tweeting birds in the background - I miss them! THANK YOU so much,
Best wishes, Liz

Thank you for making Ed Justice such an incredible experience this semester. Your sage counsel during our weekly meetings, thoughtful feedback on student work, and organizational savvy behind the scenes between and during class helped a motley crew of undergraduates, masters, and doctoral students learn with purpose and clarity in less than ideal circumstances. They and I are all the better for your efforts. I am so excited to continue working with you through the Ethics Pedagogy Fellowship next year. What amazing things will come of it! --Jake

What a learning journey we brought each other on through Education in Uncertainty beginning in the fall and then into various spin-off smaller learning communities through the rest of the year. Not only are you attuned and attentive to the students, but you are witty, wise and really wonderful. I'm not sure that I could have pulled off this year without you. And you are more than just the dynamic duo. James- you have been my go-to person who just gets it on every level; I can't believe there was a time that I actually taught you when I feel like I have been learning from you ever since. There are no words to quite capture my gratitude to you for sticking with me through all kinds of version of crazy and helping me maintain my sanity. I think we laughed our way through much of it. Shubh- you have been such a gift to me and to the students- you are unrelentingly supportive and warm and probably the most clear headed person I have ever had the honor to meet. Thank you both... My appreciation of you as a team and as individuals is infinite. I will truly miss our late nights together.
Warmly,
Holly

From brainstorming ideas, to building a design and structure, to editing and uploading videos, to supporting students and shepherding them though content and assignments, to grading and providing feedback, you touched everything with care, skill, and commitment.
We still hear from students that being in H616 “Section” is one of their most memorable and enriching experiences at HGSE, and only you could make that possible. We appreciate and admire what you were able to do week after week to create community and facilitate learning in ways that our big class needed. In the end, even after details of the specific content fade from students’ minds, how they felt when they were with you and each other will shape their development as professionals and persons.
Dear Team S-052: Sophie Barnes, Edwin Chng, Jorge Encinas, Alexis Gable, Shirin Hashim, Kate Larned, Matthew Lenard, Fei Yuan, and Eddie Kim,I will always be grateful for your advocacy, your expertise, and your compassion. In a difficult and isolating semester, you stepped up to support me, each other, and our students to create a cohesive and sustaining "S-052 community." You aligned around our priorities "physical and mental health, then maybe learning," and met our students where they were. I have the utmost confidence in you as you grow to take on more quantitative teaching roles in the future. Sophie, thank you for your unflagging positivity and team-building among TFs and in your section, where watching you teach was not just instruction but affirmation. You also always had your finger on the pulse of the class and helped remind me when and how to pace myself and the material.Edwin, always so alert even when halfway around the world, your teaching was always so patient, paced, and clear. Thank you for your keen responses on Slack, for helping to bridge the S-040/S-052 leap, and for helping to remind me that so many of my students were, like you, so close while also half a world away.Jorge, I don't know how you welcomed a newborn into a thriving family while also supporting your section and our team so effectively. I always appreciated your questions--you were open and honest about being new to much of the second-half material while helping to model inquisitive and dedicated learning for our students.Alexis, I am not sure whether I achieved my promise of being less work than a double slot in another course, but I know our students benefited from it. I am grateful for the time and patience you dedicated to them and the strong community you built in your section. (And of course I also appreciate your belief in redemption for Star Wars villains.)Shirin, I appreciated your excellent pedagogical instincts in Slack and in sections, writing out not just grammar but greek (equations) and graphs as appropriate. You and Alexis made a considerable "cleanup hitting" duo in the fourth slot for sections--I could always rely on you to catch lingering misconceptions by midday on Friday.Kate, thank you, too, for always stepping up with confidence into the leadoff spot with Sophie and doing so well to maintain a supportive community in section. As part of a team with great causal inference training, too, I always appreciated your probing questions.Matthew, thank you for being so active on Slack (including posting jobs, you might even be responsible for a few placements!), for stepping up to teach R sessions, and for stepping up for Jorge earlier in the semester. I also appreciated your and Kate's reliable "score saving!"Fei, as part of the evening crew for both teaching and section, I also found you consistently clear and patient in your instruction. Your feedback was also keen, kind, and supportive, far clearer than your support for plastic straws :-)Eddie, last but certainly not least, you took the bulk of responsibility for a massive programming component of the course yet again, helping to lead a (R)evolution. Thank you again for your rapid and high-quality code and output!

To the kind, generous, creative, resourceful, committed team of HPL 2020, I want to acknowledge the special role you played in the lives and adjustment process for so many students last summer. I have often thought of you as the first TFs at HGSE -- and the most important members of the teaching team -- that students come to know and trust as part of their journey as students. All of last summer, you never wavered in your commitment to supporting our incredible students, and you defined for me what humanizing looks like. I can't tell you how often someone tells me how amazing their TF was and how your work with students made them feel like they could tackle graduate school, and you reaffirmed for so many students that their interests and commitments matter and can be at the heart of their "why" in their program. Your love of learning and your dedication to meaningful relationships in a learning community are constant lessons for me. Thank you, and with deep and abiding respect, Matt
