Choose an Enlightenment philosophers and one of their key ideas from the list in Google Classroom and documents and Google Slides, or additional research.
Create at least one post in the appropriate section based on whether you support or oppose the idea in the voice of your assigned philosophe. The post should summarize a key idea from their writings. Include your philosophe's name in each posting you make. Create a post by clicking on the plus sign.
Engage in a Debate via Comments: Students must respond to at least two classmates’ posts as if they were another philosophe engaging in a debate. Add an image that represents the philosophy or your argument.
Engage with your classmates’ posts:
- Comment on at least 2 other posts with thoughtful counterarguments or supporting evidence
- Use reactions to show agreement/disagreement with arguments

I oppose the religious intolerance my home has developed. I believe that the intolerance of different views has led to more harm and war within the world. Intolerance has allowed for those in power to give the harshest punishments to those who hold differing beliefs or new ideas.

I believe in the rule of law where everyone, even the government, must follow the laws created. The government should be based on a social contract that protects peoples rights and freedoms. I also believe that the government's power should be separated into 3 branches, the legislative, executive, and judicial, to prevent others from becoming too powerful and abusing it, also to maintain equality among all individuals. I truly believe our government should be fair.

I believe that a government should be run by the ruler being loyal to the state. A ruler should seek to better the lives of the people and hear their problems so they could be solved.

I believe people should have rights even if they're deemed guilty. No man should be called guilty before being sentenced by a judge. Innocent people get accused of being guilty and also tortured. People say they're guilty but truthfully they aren't and they just don't want to get tortured.

Diderot - Religion's faults

I believe that religion, especially the Catholic Church, has been the reason for people's ignorance, misconceptions, and oppression. As an atheist I believe it is important to have your own reason rather than blindly follow the church's dogmas. Your religion hinders you from forming your own thoughts and being able to have your own morals. In my Encyclopédie I’ve written that the church should be separated from the state. The church's ideas should not have influence over our government. People should have the freedom to question everything and find fault in the church's doctrines.

Jean Jacques Rousseau - Society Needs a Social Contract

I believe that society needs to have a social contract. A social contract is when everyone uses their will collectively to force the government to follow the will of the community, also known as general will, while also allowing everyone to remain free and keep their natural freedoms. This allows the people to work together to make the government do what is the best for the community.

I believe women should have the same rights as men. I advocate that women should have the education and rights that men have. Men are being hypocrites and tyrants by fighting for rights and not letting women have the same rights. If women had the same education we would have the same capacity of intelligence.

David Hume - Questioning Miracles

I don't believe in miracles since they have no strong evidence to support them. We should question them and the people that support the so called miracles, since people will of course believe what they want to believe. Another thing I must say is that there is no strong evidence to prove that the universe was created by a God even if it does seem designed.

I am for education equality for girls in school. I believe that everyone should have an education, not only men but women too. I did this by sponsoring the first school for girls in Russia and made an elementary system for the further education of kids. I also made the first act for education in Russia saying that in minor school districts a two year course is necessary and in major school districts a five year is necessary. I believe that education for all is really important and I believe its apparent in what I did for education.

I opine that people should have more liberty when it comes to the presence of economies. The government should infrequently have all the jurisdiction over economic liberties and tariffs.

I believe that all wealth comes from agriculture because people need food and materials to survive. The government should not interfere with the economy, should not restrict trade, and the government should not have complicated taxes. I believe a strong government is needed to keep everything in order and that the government should protect private property. High taxes hurts the economy and farmers. Prosperity and order are signs of a society doing good.

I believe that in every government there are three powers Executive, legislative, and judicial. Each power checks one another and does its duties. Division of power creates peace of mind in our people and doesn't violate their rights. This division also prevents tyranny and allows for checks and balances.

I believe the ways serfs are treated are inhuman. I believe serfs should be able to choose freely without being forced to by a Master. I believe serfs can be able to choose their own careers and be successful. I believe serfs should be able to move to whatever estate they want to and be married to who they choose. This will permit peasants to pay higher taxes which will help our economy.
