Who- Germany, France, United States

When- May 4th, 1945

What- Castle Itter was a Nazi held castle in Austria holding only 14 people captive. With Nazi plans to kill the captives, French VIPs in the castle sent a cook to a local town to convince an anti-Nazi German General and Austrian resistance leader named Josef Gangl to protect them. Realizing he didn’t have enough troops, Gangl flagged down a U.S. division led by Captain Jack Lee, and the two agreed to defend the fort. 150 men and one Sherman tank were set to defend the castle against the incoming Nazi force. The defense held the castle themselves, suffering only one casualty when Gangl took a bullet for a French VIP, as American reinforcements would sway the battle.

Significance- The battle is hailed as “The Last Battle” and, had Gangl never defended the fort, the history of post-war France would have been drastically different following the deaths of the VIPs

Interesting Fact- French tennis star Jean Borotra, one of the captured VIPs, attempted to fight the incoming force with a tennis racket

James & AJ
