Theme: Immersive performance

Dramatic Question/Focus:
To explore the dynamic between the different masks we wear compared to the mask people see us wear.

Meaning:
Masks, feeds from a common thought process within society that leads people to believe they wear masks is certain situations or with certain people. One when in public, one when with friends, another with family… and even one when by ourselves. This immersive performance aims to explore this concept and showcase the difference in these personas people enact. Whist expecting to witness a traditional theatre production, a twist is given where audience members are able to partake in the action on stage. The cast, along with the participant, are assigned large characterised masks, and given instructions leading them, and the remaining audience through the plot. Unaware to the participants on the stage, a live feed camera embedded into the masks projects their true expressions to screen above the stage. The audience are now able to watch two perspectives of the same situation/storyline… one of the physical stage, and the other being the organic reactions and expressions of the participants.

Through these intermedial elements, meaning is generated… allowing the audience to substantiate the effect of the masks. Not are the participants able to freely react to the plot, “safe” behind the mask and away from the audience’s view… the audience are able to see that parallel… but are also presented with the notion of the physical masks on the stage, proposing an added layer connecting into society expectations… the masks representing how humanity should behave or feel in certain situations.

‘Masks’ takes the abstract concept of how humanity view each other and how we perceive ourselves to humanity… what mask we see and what mask we portray. The concept is grounded in a Queenslander style home, and allows the audience to choose how and what they watch. The audience, upon arrival at the venue, are split into groups and takes to separate rooms around the house… all these rooms are joined to the central room of the Queenslander… this bring the “stage”. Along with each audience’s personal screens, the observation rooms are equip with live recordings of the stage. The play begins with the actors derived from iteration two of this process. When faced with a decision in the plot… the actors remove themselves from the action and consult the options they have with their audience member group, still watching from the side rooms. The progress of the plot is now in the hands of each audience group… who once have made their decision are able to watch their choices being portrayed.

The actors/characters, are costumed in the large emotional mask, fitted with live feed cameras. This is where another choice can be made… each audience member has the ability to watch the emotions portrayed by the masks in relation to the action on stage… or watch the actors behind the mask and how they might truly be feeling in the circumstances.

Iteration 3 - Meaning behind work: Moral dilemmas role in society is to show the controversial opinions that common people hold. The classic trolley dilemma evokes strong emotions about issues people didn’t even know they had. In this iteration, a visual art film depicting a dilemma has been made to evoke emotions in the audience members (students in the tutorial). The film depicts a story of a group of travellers wandering through a cave by the ocean with a pregnant woman, searching for a way out. They find a small exit and urge the pregnant woman to go first. Upon leaving she becomes stuck, trapping the travellers and leaving them to drown when high tide comes. A traveller comes forward with a stick of dynamite, leaving them with two options. Either sacrifice the pregnant woman, saving the majority, or allow her to survive, while the other travellers drown. Unaware to the participants in the audience, when the video is played, their live reactions will be filmed and recorded. The members will also be asked to give their position on the dilemma, creating more controversy and division. The purpose of this is to prove that when displaying a polarizing scene on stage or on film, reactions vary among audience members. Hence, this iteration is vital research for the play involving masks juxtaposed with real-time reactions, as the emotions evoked will be obvious and polarising.

  Summary of key feedback:

The bright and aesthetic elements of the video drew in audience reaction

The audience was shocked when asked, ``What do they do?” repeatedly after the dilemma was depicted

The contrast of the colourful gifs with the dark voiceover evoked powerful emotions in the audience

Summary of responses/revisions:

The class was very divided with their answers at the end of the viewing

The final product of the stage production with involve a series of moral dilemmas, or stories that leave the audience with perhaps a polar opposite view to the person beside them
