During this time, many countries introduced acts such as the clean air acts and clean water acts.

The group of people occupied the island to raise awareness towards the way the government treats reservations. The conditions of the island symbolized conditions of many of the reservations. No running water, outdated sanitary facilities, and the such. On the reservations, death rates were higher than the US average, birth rates were higher, and living conditions were similar to the conditions on Latin america.
