When Howl was younger, he made a deal with a falling shooting star, Calcifer. When Calcifer fell from the sky, he was supposed to die, but Howl saved him. In exchange for saving him, Calcifer gave him magical powers. However, to complete the deal, Howl had to give up his heart, which Calcifer ate. To save him, Sophie must find a way to get his heart back.

As she goes on the adventure of her life, she realizes her old way of life was completely wrong, as even the eldest daughter can lead an exciting life. Her relationship with Howl becomes more complicated as they both realize they're in love with each other.

Originally from Wales, his name was Howell Jenkins, but he felt as if he was too normal and ordinary and decided to change his name and home. However, he shows a love for his sister and nephew and nieces whenever he visits them.

Although he cares so much about his looks, he showed his love for Sophie when she was kidnapped and he was so worried that he forgot to shave and brush his hair. As soon as Sophie saw him in that state, she realized his love for her, and knew that she could stay with him for the rest of her life.
