When I think about culture, I think about the personal expectations, experiences, and beliefs each person has. I like to think of of it as an adaptable mind set in which we look for opportunities to continue to learn and grow as educators. Culture matters because teachers and students have different backgrounds, experiences, and culture.  A classroom is melting pot where everyone brings something different to the "table".  It is important to recognize, support, and celebrate these differences so that students feel comfortable and welcome and then learning can take place.

Respecting and valuing different languages, background and culture in our students is probably one of the reasons why we became ELL teachers.  I think as ESOL teachers we understand and embrace this idea.
