This is a newly built Police department. This is very modern and shows the investment of public safety. With this new building Im assuming the department gained more assets, im unsure of what specifically. This is an asset because of public safety, modern facility, and its visible.

This is an elementary, which is very important as it serves children and families. This is an asset because of the education access, community, and suport systems. The school had many signs up of different programs offered such as free/reduced lunch and after school support for lower income families. This seems to be the heart of the neighboorhood even though this is a low income area.

Pioneer Park, West Center Street, Provo, UT

Pioneer park is an open public space. Many people come here to just relax and do many activities. I know farmer markets are done often here in the summer. In the colder months, the park is usually filled with christmas lights. This all makes it a place for the community to get together. This is also a playground and a splash pad for kids to play as well.

Next to the elementary with this church, but it also specifically had this sign up " Community Resource Center". After a bit of research I found out it is a volunteer run center, part of the MyHometown Provo initiative, offering free classes and activities to meet the education and social needs of underserved neighborhoods, particularly in South Provo. This is such a big asset to the whole community in this area, as it helps with education and social needs.

Visiting the neighborhood again with a focus on assets was definitely a new experience. There’s still a lot of work to be done in the area and many challenges the community faces, but there are also small strengths that really make a difference. Places like Franklin Elementary, Pioneer Park, and the community resource center all provide important support for families. These places seem to be aware of the problems the neighborhood faces and are doing their part to help. Many people living here have some type of social need, and it’s great to see that there are programs available in the area to support them. This experience reminded me that every neighborhood, even one that feels neglected, still has people, places, and institutions working to make it better.
