WOMEN'S MARCH There are thousands of people in the street. I think all the people in the photo are protesters. Men and women, young and old, black and white, are holding signs and are demonstrating. The demonstration took place in Washington DC, the capital city of the United States because there is the Capitol in the background. The Capitol is the home of the United States Congress. A lot of women are wearing pink hats, so maybe they want to defend women’s rights. The demonstration must have taken place in winter because the demonstrators are wearing warm clothes and hats. We can read the name of President Donald Trump, so maybe it was just after his election.

The title is Perfect Wives by Virginia Nicholson.
At the top, there is the author's name. It looks like a painting.

In the foreground, we can see a young woman who looks happy. She's holding a broom/duster and is wearing an apron so I guess she's cleaning. The apron is white with blue and green spots on it.

We think the author wants to show the image of women in the fifties. It is sexist, because wives don't have to clean and cook to be perfect! Looking at the book cover, we suppose women are/were happy to be housewives.

       Thursday 21/12
QUESTIONS ON THE DOCUMENT HOOVER FOR CHRISTMAS

- What sort of document is it?
It is an advertisement (=ad) created by Hoover for a new vacuum-cleaner (= hoover).
It probably dates from the fifties.
- Who is on the picture?
We can see a woman laying on the floor next to a Christmas (Xmas tree). She is wearing a green and white dress.
- What is she doing?
She's reading a card, which must be a Xmas card she has just received from her husband. She looks happy and she is smiling.
- When does the scene take place?
The scene takes place during Xmas, maybe on December 25th in the morning.
- Can you describe the colours?
In the background, the colour is white. We can notice similar colours (green and red), mostly Xmas colours. It gives a harmonious impression.
- What is your opinion?
I think it reduces the woman to her role in the house: In the fifties she used to be a housewife receiving technological presents to improve her lifestyle. Sixty years later, it seems a little sexist and stereotyped. Can a woman be happy just because she gets a news hoover?
