Strength- This year we are having fun with a writing assignment. Each year I like to publish a class book of a writing piece. Parents can purchase the book if they'd like. This year's topic is their favorite cartoon character. I wasn't real excited about that but I went with it because they were excited. We then are creating a digital photo of the child with their favorite character on the same photo. They are awesome and kids love it!!

I have become a more avid reader in the last few years. I am finding more enjoyment in taking time to just sit and read, especially now that I can do it with Teagan. A challenge of teaching literacy today is balancing digital with print literature. Also, teaching children how to decipher what digital literacy is appropriate or accurate for use and what is not.

My literacy is continually changing and has changed drastically over the past 5-10 years. My problems is I still feel that I'm just not doing enough. I think the plan I want to follow for the rest of this school year and for my summer professional development involves working closely with my resources at hand to educate myself on all of the digital tools available to my students. I would like to utilize my technology specialist, my literacy coach, and my media specialist to help get myself acquainted with the apps and programs appropriate for my second graders. Once given a tutorial and working collaboratively with my team, I can compile ideas to incorporate with my students. This way I will have new digital tools to hit the ground running next year when we all go one to one with devices. I am very excited about digital literacy progression as a teacher. 💻📒📚📱💡

Finding balance with using physical books and technology - I love going to buy a new book and opening it for the first time. Sharing a new text with my students is something that excites me. When I first started teaching, we used more traditional books and seemingly were forced to use mentor texts, in the past few years I feel like we are able to explore more texts, teaching through our own passion. I love having that freedom and the resources to be able to share that with my students.

I have seen a huge change in literacy over the last 10-15 years. The K kids are expected to read and write at a much higher level. Most of the kids can handle this, but some are still struggling. The element of play and talking and communication can be lost with some of the pressure. I try hard to not let this happen in my classroom.

I feel that there is a huge push for Kindergarten students to read at a much higher level than 10 years ago. With more students attending preschool prior to starting school, I feel that their is a gap between our low income students that do not attend prior to K. This brings different dynamics within the classroom and much more differentiation among the students. I believe that Kindergarten kids start to understand very early on that some students are much more advanced then they are and it inhibits their motivation to grow.

I feel like literacy has most of the same components as it did 10 years ago when I started teaching but they look a lot different. I feel like the love of reading has more of a focus and the thinking that goes along with reading and writing has become a priority. Digital tools for reading and writing have changed the way we teach reading and writing. I feel like meeting the needs of every learner is a challenge each day, making sure each kid is growing and getting what they need.
