On the coast it is much more of a tropical with jungles and warm climate. But when you get to the areas of the country with a higher elevation in the Andes it's a lot cooler and along with the mountains there are volcanoes. The country has warm and cold deserts and there are rainy monsoon areas. It has part of the Amazon rainforest, a giant mountain range and the very tropical climate and geography of the galapagos. It's a very diverse country for how small it is.

The 2 most popular destinations in Ecuador are the Galápagos Islands and Quito. The Galápagos Islands have intrigued and inspired visitors from around the globe. Named for the giant tortoises on the islands, this Site is home to a unique ecosystem that largely evolved without outside influences and offers amazing wildlife viewing. And it's home to one of the most active volcanic area in the world. And Quito is filled with colonial architecture and is the largest historic center in South America. It's known for its many old churches, beautiful public squares, and world-class museums. Ecuador has been a favorite with artists and is a great place to shop for local art and crafts.

Some of the most popular meals in Ecuador consist of Plantain chips, Aji, Patacones and Salchipapas. There are many more but those are some of the most popular ones. Those are mainly snack foods and not meals. My personal favorite ecuadorian dish that I've had is shrimp encocado. It is shrimp with a flavorful coconut sauce served with rice. It's amazing! The National Dish is The Bolon de Verde. It is a fried mashed green plantain ball with cheese. Suspiros is a very popular dessert and it is a pastry type thing usually made with acidic ingredients like lemons.

El Año Viejo and Nuevo Año is the countries New Year. Dummy bodies are built, often with depictions of political figures, and dressed with old clothing to be burnt as a symbol of moving on to better things. In Quito, the streets are full of people celebrating. Widows of the year, who are actually men dressed as women, line the street. Around midnight, giant fires are started to burn the dummy’s and everyone hugs to celebrate the new year. Carnival is also a big one. This holiday is celebrated in Ecuador before Lent with parades, brightly colored clothing and masks, festivals and street wars with water balloons and water guns to take advantage of the 4 day weekend.
