Saul of Tarsus was instructed by high authorities to go to Damascus and any man or women who seemed to follow Jesus would be arrested. On the road to Damascus, Saul was struck by a blinding light, he fell to his knees and heard “Saul, Saul why do you persecute me… I am Jesus whom you are persecuting. Rise and go into the city and their you will be told what you must do.” When Saul had reached Damascus, a disciple named Ananias gave Saul his sight back. Once Saul had regained his strength, he got baptised and changed is Jewish name Saul to his Christian name Paul. Paul conversion in Damascus is significant because Paul had such a large change of heart. He went from persecuting believers and followers of Jesus to becoming a follower of Jesus. He then began spreading the Gospel values to everyone and converting Jews and gentiles.

Over a ten-year period, after Paul’s conversion, Paul went on three main journeys. On his journeys he did four major things, he spread the gospel values, he converted Jews and gentiles, he started Christian communities and he gave guidance and supported established communities. During Paul’s first journey, he started in Antioch Syria, the he went to Salamis, then to Paphos, Antioch, Iconium, Lystra, Derbe, Perge, Myra and then back to Antioch. Paul visited already established Christian communities and he started Christian communities and supported and gave advise. On Paul’s second and third Journey, he visited the same places and new places.

Paul wrote a total of thirteen letters which became a total of thirteen books in the new testament. Paul's Letters were not written overnight and had such detail, importance and structure. The structure of Paul's letters was greeting, prayer, message and instruction. The purpose of Pauls letters was to reassure newly established Christian churches that Paul couldn’t visit at he moment what Jesus and God wanted them to do, the gospel values and other specific values that Paul wanted them to embrace. For example, the letter that Paul sent to the people of Corinth had the key messages of equality, love, life after death and happiness and peace.

During Paul’s letter to the Galatians, one of the main cultural challenges Paul faced is the Jewish law stating that all gentiles wishing to become Christians had to under go circumcision. People of this time believed this because of the Jewish background of Jesus and his Apostles. Paul strongly resisted against this law because of the commandment “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” (Gal 5:14) he did not believe that gentiles had to under go circumcision but just have a strong faith in Jesus and God.

Paul wrote a number of epistles and each contained many messages that we can interpret and apply to our lives today. One of Pauls main messages in one of his epistles is that the past does not define us. A person who is feeling trapped by past failures or mistakes will benefit from reading this and can start fresh. Another one of Paul’s main messages in one of his epistles is the importance of quiet time. A person who doesn’t know what to do with their life will benefit form reading this and spend quality time with themselves.
