Globalization- A process by which regional societies, economies, and cultures have become joined together through an international system of trade, transportation, and communication. It benefited the American consumer because it offered new and varied products at low prices. Globalization had it's drawbacks because it often led to more labor overseas and increase in pollution and environmental damage, which led to many protests against globalization.

Globalization is significant because it led to the global economic crisis of 2007. Because of Globalization, we became a country that relied more and more heavily on foreign wealth. As Americans' spending increased, leading to huge losses in the GDP and led to the creation of bubbles like the housing bubble that collapsed in 2008. This is all significant because due to Globalization, the rest of the world felt the impact of the recession in the US.

In early August 1990 Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein ordered an invasion on Kuwait. Shocked and alarmed by the sudden invasion fellow Arab powers such as Saudi Arabia and Egypt called upon the United States and other world powers to intervene. In January of 1991, Hussein defied the United Nations demands to withdraw from Kuwait and a massive air offensive known as Operation Desert Storm, led by the United States, began the war and only after 42 days of attacks in the air and on the ground, the President George H.W. Bush declared a cease fire and most of the Iraqi forces in Kuwait fled or surrendered. This war would lead to a second Gulf War known as the Iraq War that would begin in 2003.

After considering the impacts of each event the Gulf war was decided to be the last impact rated number 1. This is so because unlike the other events such as 9/11 and Globalization the event did not have such a large economic, political, social or global impact as the others. It did not have as much of death or destruction either.

On September 11, 2001, 19 Islamic extremists associated with al-Qaeda hijacked four airliners and carried out suicide attacks upon two targets in the United States: the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Two of the planes flew into each of the twin towers of the World Trade Center, a third plane hit the Pentagon outside of Washington D.C., and the fourth plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania. The attacks devastated the nation, causing extensive death and devastation. Over 3,000 people were killed during the attacks on Washington D.C. and New York. The attackers themselves had been reportedly financed by Saudi fugitive Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaeda terrorist organization, allegedly attacking the United States in retaliation for America’s support of Israel, its involvement in the Gulf War, and the continued presence of the U.S. military in the Middle East. Some of the terrorists had lived in the United States for a short time and even took flying lessons at commercial flight schools here. Others managed to secretly enter the country before the attacks and helped smuggle knives and box-cutters onto the planes to assist in the hijacking.

The events of 9/11 completely shook American society. It transformed America’s foreign and domestic policy to combat terrorism at home and abroad. It deeply damaged the economy and America’s feeling of security in its own country. It was the largest foreign attack on American soil and plunged America into the War on Terror.

The Great Recession was a period of economic decline, unlike the Depression; the Great Recession had lasted about a decade, from 2000-2010. It had been concluded to be the worst recession since World War II. The Great Recession was related to the financial crisis (2007-08) and the U.S. Subprime mortgage crisis (2007-09) and led to the scarce value in assets declining the market economy. The Great Recession had caused much decline in real estate, marketing, and finances.

-N.C.

The Great Recession had a significant impact that shook the lives of Americans for years to come. The Great Recession had been a decline the market economy and had caused much downfall in the financial sector of the world. The Great Recession was rated third because it had a large economic, political, and global impact however it had not accumulated as much death and destruction leaving the impact of 9/11 to become greater. The first event had a high death count leaving both globalization and the Great Recession to have great impacts on society and the economy both domestic and global.

Between 2003-2014, the U.S. was engaged in two pre-emptive wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. These conflicts cost trillions of dollars and helped prevent the spread of terrorism, in some cases. There is evidence that the U.S. occupation in Iraq prepared the conditions under which ISIS arose.
