For over 200 years before the Civil War, black people were enslaved, and treated unfairly. Black people had limited rights compared to white people.

“Segregation, separation of groups of people with differing characteristics, often taken to connote a condition of inequality.” (Encyclopædia Britannica) Black people did not get the same quality things that white people did. Their education was not as sophisticated as the education that white people got. They also had to sit in the back of the bus, go to segregated restaurants with less valuable foods, drink from different fountains, go to different movie theaters, etc. White people always got the better food, education, drinking water, and their overall quality of life was better than colored peoples.

So, Alia did not get to see her father, although, she did meet Travis, who helped her escape. Then, Travis died, and Alia made it out alive, along with her father, who also made it out alive. Jesse wanted to find out why her brother (Travis) was in the towers on 9/11. But then she got in a fight with her father, and her parents separated. So, Jesse had to find out why Travis was in the towers, with the help of her friends. Then, Jesse found out why he was in the towers that day, and she met Alia, the girl that was with Travis on 9/11.

Black people were segregated and treated less than white people, they had to use worse quality things and go to segregated places. Black people were constantly bullied and treated less, for their color of skin. Black people had segregated transportation, restaurants, entertainment, etc. Black people did not get the good quality items that white people got.

In All We Have Left, Muslim people were thought as rude and the cause of the 9/11 attacks, Muslims were also thought as less, just like black people were. In All We Have Left, Jesse’s father continuously blamed Muslims for Travis’ death, and the destruction of the towers on 9/11. Muslim people were looked at and considered trouble, just like black people were.

How I Have Come Of Age

I had to come of age last year when I found out my brother has high functioning autism. He was diagnosed many years ago but I found out last year. I realized the way that I treated him was not fair, or loyal. The way he reacted to certain sounds and senses, was not because he was odd or annoyed, but because of his disability. I had to step up my game and learn to treat him better.

I began to ask him politely to stop making humming or clicking noises, because those can be a little annoying. And I keep the windows closed in the car when we are on the highway, as well as turn the music down in the car, because he is sensitive to certain noises. There are so many things that I have done to treat my brother better, but that list would go on forever.

What makes the situation worse, was I had no idea. I’ve treated him terribly for years. His diagnosis has affected the way he socializes, his learning, and his tolerance for things. If I had known he had autism years before I found out, I would have treated him better, and have been more patient with him.

Although I found out about his diagnosis later than others, I still had the opportunity to change the way I act around him. I feel the knowing of his diagnosis has helped me realize that I can do better, and there is always room for improvement.
