Marijuana is a greenish yellow leaf that is found naturally from the cannabis plant. The leaf shape is similar to a six-sided star, with ridges. This drug is considered a depressant, as it can slow down one's reaction time and body functions.

USAGE
Marijuana can be used in multiple ways, for example, ingesting. The most common way to use marijuana is to smoke it. Small amounts of marijuana are rolled into cigarette papers and smoked. These are called "spliffs" or "joints." Pipes are also used, both the conventional sort that are made for tobacco and special ones just for marijuana or hashish. More elaborate pipes, called "bongs," pass the smoke through water as the user inhales.
Marijuana, or more often hashish, is also baked into food, such as "hash brownies." The cooking process releases the same chemicals that are released while smoking. When eaten, baked hashish products can provide the strongest—and most unpredictable—high. Some users can brew marijuana as a tea as well.

Mental Effects: Users can experience anxiety, paranoia, panic attacks, and hallucinations. Perception of time also slows, and ability to gauge distance, depth, and speed accurately is distorted. Within seconds of entering the bloodstream, the cannabinoids in marijuana bind to special areas in the brain called THC receptors. These regions, located throughout the brain, are heavily concentrated in the hippocampus, which controls learning and memory. This means that weed has strong effects on the user's ability to store short-term memories.
Physical Effects: Marijuana joints the same size as a cigarette produce five times the carbon monoxide in subjects' blood. Smoking marijuana produces three to four times the tar of tobacco, and more of it stays in the lungs.
-Long-term effects: Marijuana smokers are at higher risk than nonusers for chronic lung diseases such as bronchitis, asthma, lung infections, and emphysema. Research also indicates that heavy marijuana use can lead to the DNA damage and cellular changes that produce lung cancer; these changes appeared to occur in marijuana smokers at an earlier age than in tobacco smokers. Cancers of the head and neck are also more common in marijuana smokers. In men, heavy long-term marijuana use can lead to lowered sperm counts and even impotence.

Marijuana, besides its recreational use, can also be considered for medical purposes. For one, many scientists believe that the predominant chemical in weed, THC, can be used for patients with cancer or AIDS, to help stimulate appetite. From this, scientists created a synthetic version of THC, called Marinol. However, most scientists believe that THC alone does not account for the appetite-enhancing qualities of marijuana.

Evidence suggests that marijuana eases the pain and the symptoms of multiple sclerosis, a progressive disease that affects the muscles. It is also used for a disease of the eyes called glaucoma, where it helps to relieve painful pressure in the eye tissue. Although it is not prescribed or indicated for use in depression or anxiety, marijuana has been used as a medication for those illnesses in the past.

A total of 28 states, the District of Columbia, Guam and Puerto Rico now allow for comprehensive public medical marijuana and cannabis programs. The Institute of Medicine issued a report that examined potential therapeutic uses for marijuana. The report found that: "Scientific data indicate the potential therapeutic value of cannabinoid drugs, primarily THC, for pain relief, control of nausea and vomiting, and appetite stimulation; smoked marijuana, however, is a crude THC delivery system that also delivers harmful substances. The psychological effects of cannabinoids, such as anxiety reduction, sedation, and euphoria can influence their potential therapeutic value. Those effects are potentially undesirable for certain patients and situations and beneficial for others. In addition, psychological effects can complicate the interpretation of other aspects of the drug's effect."

Further studies have found that marijuana is effective in relieving some of the symptoms of HIV/AIDS, cancer, glaucoma, and multiple sclerosis.1

It is widely believed that marijuana use was first referenced in a Chinese Manuscript, and was present in Middle Eastern cultures. Later, in The Book of Marco Polo, Marco Polo described hashish use in religious sects around the Middle East, circa 1307 CE. European explorers arriving to the New World first observed the plant in 1545. It was considered to be such a useful crop that early Jamestown settlers in 1607 began its cultivation and later, in Virginia, farmers were fined for not growing hemp. In 1617, it was introduced into England, and was first considered for use in canvas and rope making. From here, marijuana use only increased, until 1937, where the Marijuana Tax Act ended legal production of hemp. Finally, in 1970, The Controlled Substances Act placed marijuana, hashish, and hash oil on the Schedule I list of controlled substances.

Relevancy in Teens

Marijuana is one of the most common drugs abused by teens. Many parents believe that marijuana use among teens is relatively harmless, a “rite of passage” that many of them say they indulged in and survived without a problem. However, today’s marijuana strands have a much higher amount of THC.

The THC in marijuana affects the way that sensory information is processed by the hippocampus, part of the limbic system in the brain that controls learning and memory as well as the combination of sensory experiences with emotion and motivation. By suppressing the neurons in the hippocampus, THC causes learned behaviors to deteriorate; thus the teen's ability to handle stimuli productively is stunted.
