As I’ve gotten older, however, I’ve realized how lucky I am to know another language and a whole other history and culture.

Hello everybody, my name is Tony Wang (Wang Xiaochuan) and I am a third year student at UBC. I was born in Vancouver, but my parents are from Chengdu, so I will usually use the Sichuan dialect to communicate with them, and not the typical Mandarin language. This video is a re-imagination of my learning experience ever since I started taking Chinese courses at UBC. 

I don't expect everybody to relate entirely to the content of the video but I hope that once you've finished watching the video, that you can take away a unique lesson that pertains to your life.

Through my experiences with these alternate communities, I have conceptualized that what I have experienced is not traditional Chinese culture, but a "culture" which is based on everything which I've developed over the years including the things I enjoy doing and whom I choose to spend my time with.

Hello everyone! I am Lucy Ding, I am currently a second year student majoring in economics. After careful consideration I decided to do my final project on how growing up in a Chinese family has impacted my emotional growth. Chinese families are famous for not being able to say "I love you," and avoid talking about their emotions. I found that speaking about one's hardships is almost like admitting defeat; very awkward and embarrassing. I show in my video the impacts that chinese and western education has had on my upbringing. Hello everyone! my name is Yuxuan Deng and currently in year one BIE program. I was born in the small city of Tianshui in the Gansu Province of China. I came to Vancouver when I was 6 and lived here with my mom ever since while my dad worked in China. 

When I was first planning my short film "My Name" I was thinking how I could shoot a film that feels different and that could inspire or maybe provide solace. I've always been inspired by good cinematography and films such as "The Joker", "Blade Runner 2049", "Interstellar". This is the first short film that I've filmed. Through this film, I hope it will connect with immigrant families and also help connect people.
