Jacob was 2 years old when I began to notice differences between him and other kids his age. I began to suspect Jacob was autistic at about 2 years old. After what appeared to be a normal infancy, we began to recognize strikingly abnormal behavior. Jacob was very quiet. He became increasingly withdrawn and lost normal eye contact. He failed to respond to loud noises and his own name. I realized he had zero words and wasn’t even trying to imitate sounds. Jacob was diagnosed with having autism spectrum disorder and developmental delay, when he was 30 months old

I can’t describe the heartache, I felt and frustration over knowing something was off but not knowing where to go or what to do. Personally, the news were challenging, but once I process the situation it was more manageable. Also, I put many limitations on Jacob out of fear and wanting to protect him, but he was capable of so much more. I believe, the hardest thing is watching your child struggle and as they grow up,

As a parent, I needed to help identify areas where my child might be able to work and do well. Sometimes their strengths are different than what you think they are. However, I think you have to experience the bad times to appreciate the good and to be able to measure progress, no matter how large or small. I had to start looking at options as soon as I realize the problem.

Having a child with autism is an emotional, physical, and economical feat. As parents of child with autism disorder, we have additional expenses that can be devastating . Because there are not enough government funded programs available to assist us. There are many expenses for example transportation, specialty schools, tutors, therapy and teachers can cost us extra expenses. Also autistic children require specialized equipment to learn such as iPods

www.myASDF.org. ASDF

What other information do you want to share?

Initially, when parents are told that their child has a disability can be traumatizing many parents are shocked by such news. Receiving such a message can produce overwhelming emotions of shock, disbelief, anxiety, fear, and despair. Most importantly, I would encourage parents to seek professional intervention at the earliest possible because it can make the difference for good prognosis. I would encourage parents to ask questions and express their emotions. Also to search for the resources available to assist the child and parents
