A reflexivity statement is a personal reflection that explores the role of the self within the research process. It’s about being self-aware, recognizing how your identity, background, and experiences shape the way you approach your work. It’s not just about the subject you’re researching it's also about how you exist within that research. In class, we learned that reflexivity is an important part of ethical, meaningful storytelling because it reminds us that we are not neutral observers we bring our own perspectives, emotions, and memories into the work.

For this artifact, I chose a place that means everything to me my home. This is where I grew up, where all my childhood memories were made, and where I continue to create new ones. It’s not just a location on a map; it’s a space full of emotion, comfort, and identity. I felt it was the most honest and powerful place I could write about.

When I sat down to create my reflexivity statement, I started by thinking deeply about myself who I am, where I come from, and why this place matters to me. I thought about my connection to my home, not just physically but emotionally and historically. I reflected on how this place has shaped me and how it continues to influence the way I see the world. I knew I had written enough when I felt like I could see my own face on the page like I had captured my voice and my truth. Reading it out loud felt formal, but also real. That’s the tone I wanted: thoughtful, intentional, and true to who I am.

Revising the statement was about fine-tuning how I expressed myself. I wanted to be clear without losing the emotion behind my words. From the first draft to the final version, I added more specific details about my connection to the space and removed anything that felt too general. When I included the statement in my letter to a writer/scholar, I made small changes to adjust for the audience I wanted it to feel like a conversation between writers. When I recorded myself reading it for the portfolio, I focused on pacing and tone to make sure my voice sounded confident and personal, like I was telling a story, not just reading a script. These changes helped me connect more authentically with whoever might be listening.

Overall, I really enjoyed this assignment because it gave me space to reflect and write honestly about myself. It made me think more deeply about my voice as a writer and how I bring my identity into every piece of writing I create. I think I’ll write something like this again whenever I need to ground myself in my work whether that’s for a project, a personal essay, or even just journaling. It’s a reminder that I matter in the story I’m telling.

The Annotation Matrix and Borderlands Letter assignment helped me explore how texts reflect identity, place, and culture. It taught me to analyze purpose, audience, context, and genre while connecting literature to personal experiences. I chose Nogales as my pinned place because it symbolizes the Borderlands where two cultures meet, mix, and sometimes clash. It’s a place that reflects both separation and unity. I analyzed Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan because Esperanza’s journey mirrors the struggles of many immigrant families. I focused on key themes like transformation, resilience, and the power of community. I collected meaningful quotes and reflected on how her growth connected to my own understanding of border life. This project deepened my appreciation for rhetorical analysis and how authors use story to express powerful messages. It also reminded me that writing can be personal and reflective. I’ll carry this experience into future writing that explores identity and place.

Fieldwork Journal, Research & Planning

This artifact is a fieldwork-based project focused on Saint Augustine Cathedral, created to explore how physical places in the Borderlands reflect identity, history, and culture. I chose the cathedral because of its deep connection to Tucson’s Mexican and Mexican-American communities. I conducted field research by visiting the site, taking photos, collecting brochures, and interviewing Father Alan. I observed the atmosphere, architecture, and interactions within the space. I learned that field research involves being present, asking thoughtful questions, and capturing details that bring a place to life. I wrote for an audience interested in cultural storytelling and wanted to communicate the layered meaning of this space. I followed conventions of oral history and ethnographic storytelling while using imagery, quotes, and personal reflection. I explored narrative techniques like setting, character, and tone. This assignment helped me connect research and storytelling. I see myself using these techniques again in future work about place and identity.

Drafting and Honoring Migrant Deaths

This artifact comes from the day we marked deaths on a map people who lost their lives crossing the border. I placed my pin on Agua Prieta because that area feels familiar to me, close to stories I’ve heard growing up. The Borderlands, to me, are not just physical spaces they’re emotional ones, full of struggle, movement, and survival. This activity hit me hard. It reminded me that these aren’t just statistics they’re people with families, dreams, and lives that mattered. As a student at the University of Arizona, an HSI, I’m beginning to see how powerful it is to write from this space, to carry the weight of these stories with care. This helped me realize that writing in the Borderlands means making space for truth and honoring pain. It made me feel more connected not just to my studies, but to my purpose. I want my writing to mean something, to remember, to resist forgetting.
