         <description><![CDATA[<p>Due to congress trying to maintain a balance of free and slave states, the compromise of 1850 emitted California as a free state.  But the anti-slavery constitution was vague and open for interpretation, this along with blacks not being allowed to take a white man to court allowed people to maintain slaves with no punishment.</p>]]></description>

Throughout the 1840s and '50s, citizens and legislators made efforts to prohibit black people from migrating into the state. despite their efforts failing, it showed off the immense amount of racism black people faced in California.</p>]]></description>
