I think that the pursuit of Bohemia is a rejection the values to some extent. On one hand, you have individualism pretty much reigning supreme (which is definitely an American value), while on the other hand, you don't have much of the traditional "American Dream," meaning no suburban housing, no picket fence, no traditional family for whom income is supplied through traditional means (i.e. blue collar/white collar jobs). There's not much of a displayed interest in garnering traditional financial and familial security.

I don't think that counterculture presents a threat to America. People have been saying that about new movements and art forms from the start (comics, movies, video games, scandalous literature) and it's always hyperbolic.

It depends what you mean by American values. Progressivist education around the first world war emphasized creativity and radical individualism, so in that way, counterculture perfectly aligns with American values. But around the second world war, the concept of the nuclear family became vitally important. Bohemia is a callback to progressivist ideals that had since been fazed out in favor of forming the nuclear family. Counterculture rejects new ideas and returns to previous tradition.

The pursuit of Bohemia is not a rejection of American values. While it may be a rejection of the "American Dream," American values don't restrict people from being themselves, they in fact do the opposite. American values promote individualism, freedom of expression, and independence, and what the artists were doing was exactly this.

I do think that the pursuit of Bohemia is somewhat of a rejection of American values, because it's a rejection of capitalism and using that system to get ahead, but I don't really think it threatens America, because it's not sustainable and for the most part people would still need to have a "real" job to get ahead or not succeed, except for an exceptional few. I think the conventional way of getting ahead in America is pretty set in stone.

I think that the pursuit of Bohemia is a rejection of the traditional American values of hard work and moving up in society. The kinds of values that immigrants came to America to make the most of. However, at present I think American values have expanded, and they aren't so rigid and can encompass a wide variety of lifestyles and ways of interacting with the world.

I don't think counterculture threatens America, I actually think it generally benefits America. It allows for the circulation of new ideas, and provides debate that can prevent our society from leaning much too far in one direction. Of course there can be exceptions to this, but I think that in general the good outweighs the bad.

I believe that the pursuit of Bohemia is simply an unconventional method of embracing American values. All though one will not attain the traditional hallmarks of the American Dream (predominantly cars, houses and your typical "all American" family), the individualism and liberty afforded the Bohemian youth definitely complements American values such as freedom and happiness in one's endeavors. Some might consider the pursuit of Bohemia a threat to America's capitalist foundations, which would therefore threaten the "American Values" if one deems capitalism to be one such a value.

I think that pursuing a Bohemian lifestyle isn't necessarily a rejection of American values, but I think that it ignores some of the more prominent American ideas. Money has very little meaning which takes away from the capitalistic parts of the economy. Living as a bohemian can also reject the idea of socialism in many ways because they live independently, but living independently is living free, which is an important American value.

i think it is in a sense a rejection of the traditional American mentality of "working hard to lift yourself out of poverty," as the pursuit of Bohemia is often younger artists placing themselves into poverty and romanticizing that lifestyle. but it also supports the American value of individualism

I think the fact that you don't have a steady job and aren't making a steady income and trying to better your circumstances could be considered a rejection of American values. But at the same time you are pursuing something you're passionate about such as art or music which embraces American values.

It is somewhat a rejection of American values of pursuing the "American Dream", earning your spot in society, and continuously climbing to be more successful. But at the same time it fully embodies the aspect of the American dream that convinces people that they can be whoever they want, do whatever they please, and still lead a happy, fulfilling lifestyle. So although this lifestyle doesn't uphold the "intended" American values, I do think it encompasses them in a unique way by allowing people to pursue what they want, helping art to thrive, and turning the East Village into a "melting pot". It's almost like the people leading this lifestyle found a loophole.

I don't think a path of Bohemia would be a rejection of American values. It's a path that doesn't seem to have large and outstanding effects accompanied with it. It's more a rejection of American values within ones-self instead of the societal and communal values. It may effect the way in which people intersect with one another but the core American values are still included.

I think that the pursuit of Bohemia is somewhat a rejection of American Values. If you define American Values of having a steady income and work then it is a rejection of those values, however, not having a steady income does not really threaten Americans. It all depends on our definition of American Values. Counterculture does not threaten America because having more cultures ensures for diverse communities which have no cons.

I think the traditional American is someone who worked hard in pursuit of vast wealth, these people reject the standard capitalist mentality. Boo communism was the thought at the time so I think it could be seen as harmful to America. If they rejected this, maybe this could lead to a rejection of democracy.
