Though Tom does not directly lie to Huck, Tom's omission of the information that "[Jim] was already free" is a form of dishonesty nonetheless, and one that could've saved a significant amount of trouble. Huck later learns that "[Tom] want[ed] to set [Jim] free" even while secretly knowing "[Jim] was already free," which ultimately makes all their efforts to free Jim unnecessary (Twain 289). Some may believe that the positive aspects in the novel, such as bravery, loyalty, and kindness, outweigh the negative ones. They may argue that the money and items the characters stole are justifiable because it was necessary for survival. However, looking at it in perspective, stealing was not the appropriate way to earn money. Additionally, people claim that at the time the book was written, it was common to believe that blacks were always at fault when havoc occurred. Huck had been told by Ms. Watson that stealing was morally wrong, and the con men were grown men that should have worked for their money rather than taking it from innocent people. Furthermore, the mindset of most of society towards African Americans is not an excuse for their appalling actions. The Great Books film also supports our claim. It explained how Mark Twain took a two year break from writing and when he returned to work on the novel, his writing seemed to take a darker turn proving the further pessimistic outlook he gained in his time off. He looked the passage up, and found the exact passage on a fifth grader's project. Additionally, according to a 2002 survey, 74 percent of students reported cheating on a test in the last year. Even Google, a massive technology empire with a net worth of nearly $530 billion, has earned themselves a bad reputation after having some false company virtues exposed. Since their 1998 birth, the company has both prided themselves with and preached the importance of net neutrality. In other words, they strongly criticize the internet service providers who block any content. It is ironic then, that Google, too, is now planning to participate in the very action they so strongly berated. Recently, there was a bomb attack targeting a German soccer team carried out by a man who wanted to make millions. The suspect, Sergej W, had bought 15,000 so-called "put options" for shares on the team and bet the share price of the team would drop. In order to get the share price to drop, a player would have to be seriously injured or killed. The suspects actions were motivated by greed alone, in hope to make millions. Luckily, no one was killed or seriously injured in the bombing.
