Teaching I choose you

I choose teaching because, learning is a continuous life process and I learn this, since my university years, back in Colombia a while ago. I found out, teaching is not only about delivering knowledge, but also there are a lot of soft skills, which definitely help you to grow, personally and professionally.

Legacy is not about the material patrimony you leave, but the cultural heritage you create. Therefore, the only way to leave a reliable immaterial heritage is through the positive influence and teaching that you can leave in others.

Early teaching stages

When I began the program, during my clinic experience, I realized that there are things quite different to the theory learned back then. For example, depending on the class topic, the vocabulary and the lecture changes as well as the dynamics related to the lesson plan.

Also, I could confirm it is vital to emphasize the key concepts during the lessons, because normally those are used in the next lessons and it's imperative to have a total and clear understanding on them.

Due to the nature of the setting, it was really complicated to familiarize with the school surroundings in my first times, because the facilities were big and it was easy to get lost, the school personnel had to guide me through. But as the saying states "practice makes perfect", and knowing better the environment made things easier and harmonic.

My Goals

I have three goals which can be summarized as follows:

-To integrate technology into the classroom as an essential part of teaching.

-To learn about new technology tools as well as the best way to use them.

-To inspire others by example of the ethical and legal compliance use of technology.

Technology Past Experience

I have a considerable amount of experience in certain engineering software, because of the career I studied, because of the programs I knew, and the complexity of the problems stated for the classes. For example, I know MATLAB, GAMS, Aspen, I have mastery level in Excel in complex functions like optimizing. In addition, for us it was required to be fully proficient in all basic office programs.

However, this experience relates to me as a student and not as a teacher. My first approach to technology in classroom was in a scheduled 10-minute session with my cooperating teacher, I explained an acid-base topic and it was a little challenging because I didn't have any experience with an interactive digital class board. Fortunately, I was guided, and the lesson was delivered at a good pace, and with a clear explanation of the topic I was applauded at the end by the class.

My Hopes and Concerns

My hopes can be summarized, in this phrase: I hope my students learn how to use technology for their lessons, considering they have to stick to certain rules and codes.

My major concerns are:

-How to delimitate the use of technology in the classroom, with resources like AI.

-How to guarantee students are using technology appropriately and only for educational purposes, during class.

-How to optimize the use of technology during the class.

-How use technology to differentiate instruction, with the focus in the key concepts and lessons' principles.

One of the most important aspects while dealing with technology is to minimize the non-education use in the classroom, to ensure it doesn't affect the student's concentration and therefore their productivity. I accepted the fact if I project authority and clear and honest communication, students would be in compliance with the class expectations.

Teaching and my passion

Some people know I'm a chess player. There are certain elements of chess that can be integrated to the teaching world, and especially the subject I'm going to be teaching. The problem-solving mentality is one of them, besides we can mention the critical thinking which can help to solve the most complex tasks in the subject. All this is related to the logical and competencies aspect of the subject. This is also connected to my career in Colombia as a chemical engineer, because as engineer the primary focus on the main subjects are the solutions to specific problems.

Related to the mental and emotional aspect the resilience is vital, because sometimes you have to keep going even against all odds and that's a challenge you need to accept. Furthermore, the fair play is crucial in the formation of any person, because it will allow to make a reputation through respect and rightness. It's not only about following rules, but also the understanding of why the rules are there.
